Movement monitoring systems and associated methods
View Patent ↗Systems and methods are disclosed that monitor movement of a person, or of a vehicle ridden by the person, to determine speed, distance traveled and/or airtime of the person or vehicle. Accelerometer-based sensors, pressure sensors or Doppler sensors may be employed in these systems and methods. A liquid crystal display may attach to the person to display speed, distance traveled and/or airtime.
1. An apparatus comprising:
a motion sensor comprising multiple accelerometers and configured to be attached to a user for transport by the user while performing an athletic activity, to generate acceleration signals in response to user movement; and
a processor configured for processing the acceleration signals to determine:
(i) acceleration due to gravity;
(ii) orientation of the multiple accelerometers from the acceleration due to gravity;
(iii) a centripedal compensation;
(iv) an earth rate compensation; and
(v) speed from the acceleration signals, the orientation, the centripedal compensation and the earth rate compensation;
wherein the multiple accelerometers comprise a pitch accelerometer, a yaw accelerometer, a roll accelerometer, a surge accelerometer, a heave accelerometer and a sway accelerometer.
2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the accelerometers is oriented relative to a different axis.
3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a clock for providing timing information used to determine the speed and/or a distance traveled.
4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor integrates the at least one acceleration signal to determine the speed.
5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor double integrates the at least one acceleration signal to determine a distance traveled.
6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a display configured for user attachment for transport by the user while performing the athletic activity and for displaying one or both of the speed of the user and the distance traveled by the user.
7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the motion sensor is configured to generate centripetal motion signals responsive to detecting centripetal motion.
8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the processor determines at least one of the speed and the distance traveled by compensating the acceleration signals based on the centripetal motion signals.
9. A method comprising:
(a) generating acceleration signals with multiple accelerometers attached to a human;
(b) processing the acceleration signals at a processor to determine acceleration due to gravity;
(c) determining centripedal compensation;
(d) determining earth rate compensation;
(e) determining an orientation of at least one of the multiple accelerometers;
(f) determining a speed adjustment component from the orientation determined in (c); and
(g) processing the acceleration signals, the speed adjustment component, the centripedal compensation and the earth rate compensation at the processor to determine a speed of the human;
wherein the multiple accelerometers comprise a pitch accelerometer, a yaw accelerometer, a roll accelerometer, a surge accelerometer, a heave accelerometer and a sway accelerometer.
10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising generating centripetal motion signals responsive to detecting centripetal motion.
11. The method of claim 10 , wherein (e) comprises the processing the acceleration signals, the centripetal motion signals and the speed adjustment component at the processor to determine a speed of the human.
