Abstract

A method, device and/or system for generating arbitrary waveforms of a desired shape that can be used for generating a stimulation pulse for medical purposes such as for spinal cord stimulation therapy, where such arbitrary waveforms can also be used for charge balancing purposes.

Claims (46)

1. A method for balancing charges provided by an implantable medical device for providing stimulation to a patient, said method comprising the steps of:

providing an electrode near a stimulation region of the patient;

providing a waveform generating circuit connected to the electrode;

the waveform generating circuit generating a first active portion of a stimulation waveform for stimulating the stimulation region using the electrode, said first active portion of the stimulation waveform having a first finite time period and a first polarity and inducing a first electrical charge at the stimulation region;

the waveform generating circuit generating a second active portion of the stimulation waveform for stimulating the stimulation region using the electrode after providing the first active portion of the stimulation waveform, said second active portion of the stimulation waveform having a second finite time period and a second polarity opposite the first polarity and including a portion having a shape other than a square wave and other than a decaying exponential, with said second active portion of the stimulation waveform substantially canceling said first electrical charge at the stimulation region of the patient, wherein

said second active portion of the stimulation waveform has a different shape than the first active portion of the stimulation waveform.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said second active portion of the stimulation waveform is a scaled inverse of the first active portion of the stimulation waveform.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said second active portion has a shape that is not an exact inverse of the first active portion of the stimulation waveform.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said second active portion of the stimulation waveform is a scaled inverse of at least a part of the first active portion of the stimulation waveform.

5. A system for balancing charges provided by a medical device for providing a therapy to a patient, said system comprising:

means for providing a first active portion of a stimulation waveform for stimulating a stimulation region of the patient, said first active portion of the stimulation waveform having a first finite time period and a first polarity and inducing a first electrical charge at the stimulation region of the patient;

means for providing a second active portion of the stimulation waveform determined based on the first active portion of the stimulation waveform for stimulating the stimulation region of the patient after providing the first active portion of the stimulation waveform, said second active portion of the stimulation waveform having a second finite time period and a second polarity opposite the first polarity and being of a shape other than a square wave, said second active portion substantially canceling said first electrical charge at the stimulation region of the patient.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein said second active portion of the stimulation waveform has a shape that is not an exact inverse of the first active portion of the stimulation waveform.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein said second active portion of the stimulation waveform has a shape that is a scaled inverse of the first active portion of the stimulation waveform.

8. The system of claim 5 , wherein said second active portion of the stimulation waveform has a shape that is a scaled inverse of at least a part of the first active portion of the stimulation waveform.

9. The system of claim 5 , further comprising means for providing a passive recovery phase after providing the second active portion of the stimulation waveform for removing any residual charge at the stimulation region of the patient.

10. A method for balancing charges provided by an implantable medical device for providing stimulation to a patient, said method comprising the steps of:

providing an electrode near a stimulation region of the patient;

providing a waveform generating circuit connected to the electrode;

the waveform generating circuit generating a first active portion of a stimulation waveform for stimulating the stimulation region using the electrode, said first active portion of the stimulation waveform having a first finite time period and a first polarity and inducing a first electrical charge at the stimulation region;

the waveform generating circuit generating a second active portion of the stimulation waveform for stimulating the stimulation region using the electrode after providing the first active portion of the stimulation waveform, said second active portion of the stimulation waveform having a second finite time period and a second polarity opposite the first polarity and including a portion having a shape other than a square wave and other than a decaying exponential, with said second active portion of the stimulation waveform substantially canceling said first electrical charge at the stimulation region of the patient, wherein

said second active portion of the stimulation waveform has a different shape than the first active portion of the stimulation waveform and is not a square wave.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein said second active portion has a shape that is not an exact inverse of the first active portion of the stimulation waveform.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein said second active portion has a shape other than a decaying exponential.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein said second active portion of the stimulation waveform has a shape other than a decaying exponential.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein said second active portion of the stimulation waveform is a scaled inverse of at least a part of the first active portion of the stimulation waveform.

15. A method for balancing charges provided by an implantable medical device for providing stimulation to a patient, said method comprising the steps of:

providing an electrode near a stimulation region of the patient;

providing a waveform generating circuit connected to the electrode;

the waveform generating circuit generating a first pulse for stimulating the stimulation region using the electrode, said first pulse having a first finite pulse width and inducing a first electrical charge at the stimulation region;

the waveform generating circuit generating a second pulse for stimulating the stimulation region using the electrode, said second pulse following adjacent to said first pulse, said second pulse having a second finite pulse width and including a portion having a shape other than a square wave and other than a decaying exponential, with said second pulse of the stimulation waveform substantially canceling said first electrical charge at the stimulation region of the patient, wherein

said second pulse has a different shape than the first pulse.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein said second pulse is a scaled inverse of said first pulse.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein said first pulse is a pulse of a first polarity, and wherein the second pulse is a pulse of a second polarity opposite said first polarity.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein a delay is provided between said first pulse and said second pulse.

19. A method for balancing charges provided by an implantable medical device for providing stimulation to a patient, said method comprising the steps of:

providing an electrode near a stimulation region of the patient;

providing a waveform generating circuit connected to the electrode;

the waveform generating circuit generating a first pulse for stimulating the stimulation region using the electrode, said first pulse having a first finite pulse width and inducing a first electrical charge at the stimulation region;

the waveform generating circuit generating a second pulse for stimulating the stimulation region using the electrode, said second pulse following adjacent to said first pulse and said second pulse having a second finite pulse width and including a portion having a shape other than a square wave and other than a decaying exponential and said second pulse inducing a second electrical charge at the stimulation region substantially canceling said first electrical charge, wherein

said second pulse has a different shape than the first pulse.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein said first active portion of the stimulation waveform is comprised of a series of unipolar stimulation phases.

21. The method of claim 19 , wherein said second active portion of the stimulation waveform is comprised of at least one charge canceling phase having a shape different than the stimulation phases.

22. The method of claim 19 , wherein said first pulse is of a first polarity, and wherein said second pulse is of a second polarity.

23. The method of claim 19 , wherein said second pulse is a scaled inverse of said first pulse.

24. The method of claim 19 , wherein a delay is provided between said first pulse and said second pulse.
