Abstract

A method for indicating a position of a radiation energy sensor element in a radiographic imaging system, the method executed at least in part by a computer, identifies the position of the radiation energy sensor element relative to a subject to be imaged and displays the identified position relative to the subject.

Claims (31)

1. A method for indicating a position of a radiation energy sensor element in a radiographic imaging system, the method executed at least in part by a computer, the method comprising:

identifying the position of the radiation energy sensor element relative to a subject to be imaged in the radiographic imaging system;

disposing the subject to be imaged between a source of radiographic energy and the radiation energy sensor element; and

displaying on the subject to be imaged the identified position of the radiation energy sensor element such that the position is visible on a surface of the subject.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the position of the radiation energy sensor element comprises sensing an emitted signal.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein identifying the position of the radiation energy sensor element comprises locating one or more reference points on an imaging detector.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the position of the radiation energy sensor element is fixed relative to an imaging detector of the radiographic imaging system.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of displaying comprises illuminating a portion of the subject corresponding to the position of the radiation energy sensor element in the radiographic imaging system.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising electronically displaying on a display at least an outline of the subject to be imaged and electronically highlighting on the display the identified position of the radiation energy sensor element relative to the displayed outline.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of electronically displaying at least the outline of the subject to be imaged further comprises one of the following: (1) obtaining an image of the subject from a radiation image, (2) obtaining a visible light image of the subject, or (3) obtaining a microwave scan of the subject.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein identifying the position of the radiation energy sensor element comprises detecting reflected energy from a component that has a fixed position relative to the position of the radiation energy sensor element.

9. An apparatus for indicating a location of a radiation sensing region in a radiographic imaging system, the apparatus comprising:

a two-dimensional exposure sensing apparatus that provides one or more radiation energy sensing regions, wherein each radiation energy sensing region has a spatial position relative to a subject to be imaged, and wherein each radiation energy sensing region is configured to provide a signal that indicates a level of radiation it has received;

a position sensing apparatus that is configured to determine for each of the radiation energy sensing regions its spatial position relative to the subject to be imaged; and

an image forming apparatus that is actuable to display on a surface of the subject to be imaged the spatial position of each of the one or more radiation energy sensing regions.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the exposure-sensing apparatus comprises one or more ion chambers or wherein the exposure sensing apparatus is disposed between the subject to be imaged and an imaging detector.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising one or more signal emitters disposed on the exposure sensing apparatus.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the position sensing apparatus comprises one of the following: (1) one or more signal emitters disposed on an x-ray source, or (2) a camera.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the image forming apparatus is one of the following: (1) a projector that is positionally associated with an x-ray source, or (2) a display.

14. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the signal is sensed by the radiographic imaging system to terminate x-ray emission.

15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising moving on the subject to be imaged the displayed position of the radiation energy sensor element.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising aligning the displayed position of the radiation energy sensor element into a desired position on the subject prior to a radiation exposure.

17. A method for indicating a relative position of a radiation energy sensor element with respect to a subject to be imaged in a radiographic imaging system, the method executed at least in part by a computer, the method comprising:

identifying the position of the radiation energy sensor element relative to the subject to be imaged in the radiographic imaging system; and

displaying on a surface of the subject to be imaged a first representation of the identified relative position of the radiation energy sensor element with respect to the subject to be imaged.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying on the subject to be imaged a modification of a shape of the radiation energy sensor element.

19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting among a plurality of displayed radiation energy sensor elements.

20. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

displaying an outline of the subject to be imaged on a display;

displaying on the display in relation to the outline of the subject to be imaged a second representation of the identified relative position of the radiation energy sensor element with respect to the subject to be imaged; and

adjusting, under user control, the second representation displayed on the display to effect a corresponding adjustment of the first representation displayed on the surface of the subject.
