Abstract

A method for capturing dislodged vegetative growth during a surgical procedure is provided. The method includes maneuvering, into a circulatory system, a first cannula having a distal end and an opposing proximal end, such that the first cannula is positioned to capture the vegetative growth en bloc. A second cannula is positioned in fluid communication with the first cannula, such that a distal end of the second cannula is situated in spaced relation to the distal end of the first cannula. A suction force is provided through the distal end of the first cannula so as to capture the vegetative growth. Fluid removed by the suction force is reinfused through the distal end of the second cannula. Subsequent to becoming dislodged, the vegetative growth is caputred by the first cannula. A method for capturing a vegetative growth during removal of a pacemaker lead is also provided.

4. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein the step of positioning includes one or more of:

placing the distal end of the second cannula and the distal end of the first cannula within the same blood vessel as that of the distal end of the first cannula;

placing the distal end of the second. cannula within a different vessel as that of the distal end of the first cannula;

placing the distal end of the second cannula within the same chamber of a heart as that of distal end of the first cannula;

placing the distal end of the second cannula and in a blood vessel and placing the distal end of the first cannula m a chamber of a heart; and

placing the distal end of the second cannula in a spaced relation to the distal end of the first cannula.

5. A method as set forth in claim 1 further comprising dislodging the vegetative growth from its position within a heart of a patient for capture by the first cannula.

6. A method as set forth in claim 5 wherein the step of dislodging includes detatching the vegetative growth from a valve within the heart of the patient.

7. A method as set forth in claim 1 further comprising dislodging the vegetative growth from its position on a foreign body within the circulatory system.

8. A method as set forth in claim 7 wherein the step of dislodging includes removing the vegetative growth from a lead of a pacemaker, which lead is attached to the heart of the patient.

9. A method as set forth in claim 1 further comprising extending a catheter into the circulatory system from the distal end of the first or second cannula.

10. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein the step of maneuvering includes positioning the first cannula in a medium size blood vessel or a large size blood vessel.

11. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein the step of providing includes capturing the vegetative growth without substantial fragmentation.

12. A method as set forth in claim 1 further comprising reinfusing, through the distal end of the second cannula, fluid removed from the patient by the suction force, to a location in spaced relation from the distal end of the first cannula.

13. A method for capturing dislodged vegetative growth during a surgical removal of a pacemaker lead from a heart, the method comprising:

maneuvering, within a circulatory system, a first cannula such that its distal end is positioned in a strategic location for subsequent capture of a vegetative growth that has become dislodged during the surgical procedure;

positioning, within the circulatory system, a second cannula, in fluid communication with the first cannula, such that a distal end of the second cannula is in a spaeed relation to the distal end of the first cannula;

providing a pump capable of simultaneously creating a suction force and a driving force, the suction force is through the distal end of the first cannula so as to capture any vegetative growth that becomes dislodged during removal of the pacemaker lead.

14. A method as set forth in claim 13 wherein, in the step of maneuvering, the location includes one of a medium-sized blood vessel, a large-sized blood vessel, or a heart chamber.

15. A method as set forth in claim 13 wherein the step of maneuvering includes expanding, at the location, the distal end of the first cannula from a first diameter to a relatively larger second diameter.

16. A method as set forth in claim 13 wherein the step of positioning includes one or more of:

placing the distal end of the second cannula and the distal end of the first cannula within the same blood vessel as that of the distal end of the first cannuta;

placing the distal end of the second cannula within a different vessel as that of the distal end of the first cannula;

placing the distal end of the second cannula within the same chamber of a heart as that of distal end of the first cannula;

placing the distal end of the second cannula and in a blood vessel and placing the distal end of the first cannula in a chamber of a heart; and

placing the distal end of the second cannula in a spaced relation to the distal end of the first cannula.

17. A method as set forth in claim 13 further comprising extending a catheter into the vessel from the distal end of the first or second cannula.

18. A method as set forth in claim 13 wherein the step of maneuvering includes positioning the first cannula in a medium size blood vessel or a large size blood vessel.
