Abstract

A hip distractor includes a pair of distractor members and a support configured to be fastened to a surgical table. The support includes at least two mounts for coupling to a pair of joints that couple the distractor members to the support. Another hip distractor includes a pair of distractor assemblies that are configured to apply a distraction load to a patient. Each of the assemblies includes a joint for coupling the corresponding assembly to a surgical table. The joint permits vertical and horizontal angular adjustment of the corresponding assembly. A method of distracting a hip includes coupling a patient's legs to a pair of distractor assemblies and simultaneously adjusting a vertical angle and a horizontal angle of at least one of the distractor assemblies.

Claims (79)

1. An apparatus for use in hip surgery, comprising:

a pair of distractor members;

a support configured to be fastened at an adjustable operable position along side rails of a surgical table;

a pair of joints, a first of the pair of joints for coupling a first of the pair of distractor members to the support and a second of the pair of joints for coupling a second of the pair of distractor members to the same support, wherein the support includes at least two mounts for detachably coupling to the joints.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a first leg mount coupled to one of the distractor members for movement relative to the one of the distractor members by both sliding and threaded engagement.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising a second leg mount coupled to the other of the distractor members for movement relative to the other of the distractor members by both sliding and threaded engagement.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a mechanism for locking one of the joints, wherein the joint is lockable; and

an actuator for the mechanism located remote from the joint.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the actuator for the mechanism for locking one of the joints is a single actuator, the joint being lockable and unlockable by manipulation of only the single actuator.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , configured to be entirely supported by the surgical table.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the support is configured to extend across the surgical table.

8. An apparatus for use in hip surgery, comprising a pair of distractor assemblies configured to apply a distraction load to a patient, each of the assemblies including a joint for coupling the corresponding assembly to a surgical table, each of the joints having a coupler and two arms received by the coupler, the two arms being located between the coupler and another portion of the assembly that extends from the joint toward a foot end of the assembly, the joint permitting vertical and horizontal angular adjustment of the corresponding assembly.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein each joint permits vertical angular adjustment of greater than about twenty degrees from horizontal, and a total range of horizontal angular adjustment of greater than about twenty degrees.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein each joint permits vertical angular adjustment of greater than about forty-five degrees from horizontal, and a total range of horizontal angular adjustment of greater than about forty-five degrees.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein at least one joint is a ball joint.

12. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein at least one joint is a universal joint.

13. The apparatus of claim 8 , configured to be entirely supported by the surgical table.

14. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein each of the assemblies includes a corresponding single actuator located distal of a foot of the patient when the distraction load is applied, the joint being lockable and unlockable by manipulation of only the corresponding single actuator.

15. A method of hip distraction, comprising:

coupling a patient's legs to a pair of distractor assemblies, each of the distractor assemblies having a joint for coupling the corresponding assembly to a surgical table, each of the joints having a coupler and two arms received by the coupler, the two arms being located between the coupler and another portion of the assembly that extends from the joint toward a foot end of the assembly; and

simultaneously adjusting a vertical angle and a horizontal angle of at least one of the distractor assemblies; and

applying a distraction load to at least one of the patient's legs.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising fastening a support to a surgical table to support the pair of distractor assemblies.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein operating room personnel attach the distractor assemblies to the support.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein adjusting the vertical angle includes rotating the distractor assembly greater than about twenty degrees from horizontal.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein adjusting the horizontal angle includes rotating the distractor assembly greater than about twenty degrees.

20. The method of claim 15 , further comprising remotely locking the vertical angle and the horizontal angle of at least one of the distractor assemblies.

21. The method of claim 15 further comprising:

manipulating at least one of the joints to simultaneously adjust the vertical angle and the horizontal angle of the corresponding distractor assembly by manipulating only a single actuator distal of a foot of the corresponding leg; and

locking a position of the corresponding distractor assembly by manipulating only the single actuator distal of the foot of the corresponding leg.

22. An apparatus for use in hip surgery, comprising:

a pair of distractor members;

a support configured to be fastened at an adjustable operable position along side rails of a surgical table; and

a pair of joints, a first of the pair of joints for coupling a first of the pair of distractor members to the support and a second of the pair of joints for coupling a second of the pair of distractor members to the same support, wherein the support includes at least two mounts for coupling to the joints.

23. The apparatus of claim 22 , further comprising a first leg mount coupled to one of the distractor members for movement relative to the one of the distractor members by both sliding and threaded engagement.

24. The apparatus of claim 23 , further comprising a second leg mount coupled to the other of the distractor members for movement relative to the other of the distractor members by both sliding and threaded engagement.

25. The apparatus of claim 22 , further comprising:

a mechanism for locking one of the joints, wherein the joint is lockable; and

an actuator for the mechanism located remote from the joint.

26. The apparatus of claim 25 , wherein the actuator for the mechanism for locking one of the joints is a single actuator, the joint being lockable and unlockable by manipulation of only the single actuator.

27. The apparatus of claim 22 , configured to be entirely supported by the surgical table.

28. An apparatus for use in hip surgery, comprising:

a pair of distractor members;

a support configured to be fastened to side rails of a surgical table;

a pair of joints, a first of the pair of joints for coupling a first of the pair of distractor members to the support and a second of the pair of joints for coupling a second of the pair of distractor members to the same support, wherein the support includes at least two mounts for coupling to the joints;

a mechanism for locking one of the joints, wherein the joint is lockable; and

an actuator for the mechanism located remote from the joint.

29. The apparatus of claim 28 , wherein the actuator for the mechanism for locking one of the joints is a single actuator, the joint being lockable and unlockable by manipulation of only the single actuator.

30. The apparatus of claim 28 , wherein the support is configured to be fastened to the surgical table via the side rails of the surgical table.

31. The apparatus of claim 28 wherein the joint is lockable in flexion/extension and abduction/adduction.

32. An apparatus for use in hip surgery, comprising:

a pair of distractor members;

a support configured to be fastened to side rails of a surgical table; and

a pair of joints, a first of the pair of joints configured to couple a first of the pair of distractor members to the support and a second of the pair of joints configured to couple a second of the pair of distractor members to the same support, wherein the support includes first and second mounts configured to receive the joints;

each distractor member including an actuator for limiting joint motion located remote from the joint.

33. The apparatus of claim 32 wherein each of the pair of joints is lockable in flexion/extension and abduction/adduction.

34. The method of claim 33 further comprising coupling the first distractor member to the other of the first and second mounts.

35. An apparatus for use in hip surgery, comprising:

a pair of distractor members;

a support configured to be fastened to side rails of a surgical table;

a pair of joints, each joint coupling one of the distractor members to the support, wherein the support includes at least two mounts for detachably coupling to the joints;

a first leg mount coupled to one of the distractor members for movement relative to the one of the distractor members by both sliding and threaded engagement; and

a second leg mount coupled to the other of the distractor members for movement relative to the other of the distractor members by both sliding and threaded engagement.

36. The apparatus of claim 35 , wherein the support is configured to be fastened to the surgical table via the side rails of the surgical table.

37. An apparatus for use in hip surgery, comprising:

a pair of distractor members configured to be detachably fastenable to a same support;

the support being configured to be detachably fastened to side rails of a surgical table and the support including left and right mounts for receiving the distractor members;

a first leg mount coupled to one of the distractor members for movement relative to the one of the distractor members by both sliding and threaded engagement; and

a second leg mount coupled to the other of the distractor members for movement relative to the other of the distractor members by both sliding and threaded engagement.

38. An apparatus for use in hip surgery, comprising:

a pair of distractor members;

a support configured to be detachably fastened to side rails of a surgical table, the support including first and second mounts;

a pair of joints, a first of the pair of joints configured to couple a first of the pair of distractor members to the first mount of the support and a second of the pair of joints configured to couple a second of the pair of distractor members to the second mount of the same support.

39. A method of hip distraction, comprising:

fastening a support to side rails of a surgical table;

coupling a first of a patient's legs to a first distractor member supported by the surgical table;

coupling a second of the patient's legs to a second distractor member fastened to one of first and second mounts of the same support, the first and second mounts each configured for receiving a distractor member; and

applying a distraction load to at least one of the patient's legs.
