Abstract

A more efficient triangular shape for metal wood clubs or driver clubs is disclosed. This triangular shape allows the clubs to have higher rotational moments of inertia in both the vertical and horizontal directions, and a lower center of gravity.

Claims (42)

1. A golf club head comprising:

a hitting cup comprised of a metallic material and having a hitting surface;

an aft cup comprised of a metallic material;

a midsection connecting said hitting cup and said aft cup comprised of a composite material;

a heel wall connecting said hitting surface to said aft cup; and

a toe wall connecting said hitting surface to said aft cup;

wherein said golf club head has a volume of about 380 cc to 480 cc, a moment of inertia, I xx , about a horizontal axis through a center of gravity of said golf club head of about 2000 g·cm 2 to about 4500 g·cm 2 , and a moment of inertia, I yy , about a vertical axis through said center of gravity of said golf club head of about 4000 g·cm 2 to about 5900 g·cm 2 ; and

wherein said aft cup includes an aft wall that is spaced apart from said hitting surface and wherein said aft wall's length is approximately 20% to about 50% of the length of said hitting surface wherein the length is measured in a toe and heel direction.

2. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein said heel wall and said toe wall are angled relative to each other.

3. The golf club head of claim 2 , wherein said golf club head is a substantially triangular shape.

4. The golf club head of claim 2 , wherein from a top view of the club head, said heel wall and said toe wall each contain a substantially straight portion.

5. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein said club head has a volume of about 400 cc to 440 cc.

6. The golf club head of claim 5 , wherein said moment of inertia, I xx , about said horizontal axis through said center of gravity of said golf club head of about 2300 g·cm 2 , to 2700 g·cm 2 , and said moment of inertia, I yy , about said vertical axis through said center of gravity of said golf club head of about 4300 g·cm 2 to 4700 g·cm 2 .

7. The golf club head of claim 6 , wherein a ratio of said moment of inertia I yy to said volume is greater than about 1.00 Kg·mm 2 /cm 3 .

8. The golf club head of claim 6 , wherein a ratio of said moment of inertia I xx to said volume is greater than about 0.62 Kg·mm 2 /cm 3 .

9. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein a density of said midsection is less than a density of said front hitting cup or a density of said aft cup.

10. A golf club head comprising:

a hitting surface;

an aft wall;

a heel wall connecting said hitting surface to said aft wall;

a toe wall connecting said hitting surface to said aft wall;

a front hitting cup containing said hitting surface;

an aft cup containing said aft wall; and

a midsection connecting said front hitting cup and said aft cup;

wherein a density of said midsection is less than a density of said front hitting cup or a density of said aft cup;

wherein said midsection further comprises at least one bridge section extending along a sole portion of said golf club head from said front hitting cup towards said aft cup; and

wherein said golf club head has a volume of about 380 cc to 480 cc, a moment of inertia, I xx , about a horizontal axis through a center of gravity of said golf club head of about 2000 g·cm 2 to about 4500 g·cm 2 , and a moment of inertia, I yy , about a vertical axis through said center of gravity of said golf club head of about 4000 g·cm 2 to about 5900 g·cm 2 .

11. The golf club head of claim 10 , further comprising a second bridge member extending along a crown portion of said golf club head from said front hitting cup towards said aft cup.

12. The golf club head of claim 10 , wherein said midsection further comprises of at least one enclosure comprised of a composite material connecting said hitting cup and said aft cup.

13. The golf club head of claim 10 , wherein said club head has a volume of about 440 cc to 460 cc.

14. The golf club head of claim 13 , wherein said moment of inertia, I xx , about said horizontal axis through said center of gravity of said golf club head of about 2800 g·cm 2 to 3200 g·cm 2 , and said moment of inertia, I yy , about said vertical axis through said center of gravity of said golf club head of about 4800 g·cm 2 to 5200 g·cm 2 .

15. The golf club head of claim 10 , wherein a ratio of said moment of inertia I yy to said volume is greater than about 1.00 Kg·mm 2 /cm 3 .

16. The golf club head of claim 15 , wherein said golf club head is a traditional shape.

17. The golf club head of claim 10 , wherein a ratio of said moment of inertia I xx to said volume is greater than about 0.62 Kg·mm 2 /cm 3 .

18. A golf club head comprising:

a hitting surface;

an aft wall;

a heel wall connecting said hitting surface to said aft wall; and

a toe wall connecting said hitting surface to said aft wall;

wherein said aft wall is spaced part from said hitting surface and wherein said aft wall length is approximately 20% to about 50% of the length of said hitting surface, wherein the length is measured in a toe and heel direction; and

wherein from a top view of the club head, said heel wall and said toe wall each contain a substantially straight portion.
