Abstract

The present invention provides aqueous dispersions that, for example, include the reaction product of an oxirane-functional vinyl addition polymer having an oxirane functionality between 0.5 and 5; an acid-functional polymer having an acid number 30 to 500; and a tertiary amine. Also described are coating compositions containing the dispersion and methods of forming the dispersion.

Claims (33)

1. An article, comprising:

a can end or a can body having a metal substrate with a film formed from a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of a quaternary ammonium salt, wherein the salt comprises the reaction product of an oxirane-functional vinyl addition polymer having an oxirane functionality of 0.5 to 5; an acid-functional polymer having an acid number of 30 to 500; and a tertiary amine.

2. The article of claim 1 , wherein the article comprises a packaging container including both the can end and the can body.

3. The article of claim 1 , wherein the article comprises a food or beverage can or a food or beverage can end.

4. The article of claim 3 , wherein the article is a 2-piece drawn food can, a 3-piece drawn food can, a food can end, a drawn and ironed food can, or a beverage can end.

5. The article of claim 1 , wherein the metal substrate is aluminum or steel.

6. The article of claim 1 , wherein the film is on an inside surface of the can end or the can body.

7. The article of claim 1 , wherein the coating composition further comprises a crosslinker.

8. The article of claim 7 , wherein the crosslinker comprises a phenoplast.

9. The article of claim 8 , wherein the film includes at least 5% by weight of the phenoplast, based on the total weight of resin solids in the film.

10. The article of claim 8 , wherein the phenoplast comprises a condensation product of (i) formaldehyde or acetaldehyde and (ii) phenol, cresol, p-phenylphenol, p-tert-butylphenol, p-tert-amylphenol, or cyclopentylphenol.

11. The article of claim 1 , wherein the film comprises a cured film.

12. The article of claim 11 , wherein the cured film includes a crosslinked polymer having a crosslink segment of the general formula:

—Y—C(R 2 )—C(R)(OH)—C(R 2 )—O—(O)C—X r —,

wherein: Y is a divalent organic group; X is a divalent organic group; R is H, or a C1 to C6 organic group; and r is 0 or 1.

13. The article of claim 1 , wherein the film is substantially free of BPA.

14. The article of claim 1 , wherein the film is completely free of BPA and aromatic glycidyl ether compounds.

15. The article of claim 1 , wherein the quaternary ammonium salt comprises at least 0.8 equivalents of tertiary amine per equivalent of oxirane group.

16. The article of claim 1 , wherein the weight ratio of the oxirane-functional vinyl addition polymer to acid-functional polymer is between 90:10 and 50:50.

17. The article of claim 1 , wherein the acid-functional polymer is an acid-functional vinyl addition polymer.

18. The article of claim 17 , wherein the acid-functional vinyl addition polymer comprises 5 to 20 parts (by weight) styrene, 30 to 70 parts alkyl (meth)acrylate, and 30 to 70 parts acid-functional monomer.

19. The article of claim 1 , wherein the oxirane-functional vinyl addition polymer has a number average molecular weight of 2,500 to 20,000 and the acid-functional polymer has a number average molecular weight of from 2,000 to 15,000.

20. An article, comprising:

a can end or a can body having a metal substrate with a film formed from an aqueous dispersion comprising a reaction product of:

an oxirane-functional vinyl addition polymer having an oxirane functionality of 0.5 to 5 and a number average molecular weight of 2,500 to 20,000;

an acid-functional polymer having an acid number of 30 to 500 and a number average molecular weight of 2,000 to 15,000, wherein the acid-functional polymer is a vinyl polymer formed as the reaction product of at least 15% by weight of acid-functional monomer; and

a tertiary amine;

wherein the weight ratio of the oxirane-functional vinyl addition polymer to acid-functional polymer is 90:10 to 50:50 and the ratio of amine:oxirane groups is 0.8:1 to 5:1; and

wherein the oxirane-functional vinyl addition polymer having an oxirane functionality of 0.5 to 5 and the acid-functional polymer having an acid number of 30 to 500 were reacted together in the presence of the tertiary amine.

21. The article of claim 2 , wherein the film is on an interior surface of the packaging container, and wherein the packaging container contains a food or beverage product in contact with the film.

22. An article of claim 20 , wherein the article comprises a 2-piece can or a 3-piece can.

23. The article of claim 20 , wherein the article comprises a food or beverage can including one or both of the can end or can body, wherein the film is located on an inside surface of the food or beverage can.

24. The article of claim 23 , wherein the food or beverage can contains a food or beverage product in contact with the film.
