Abstract

Embodiments of the invention relate to tilting pad bearing assemblies and apparatuses. The disclosed tilting pad bearing assemblies and apparatuses may be employed in downhole motors of a subterranean drilling system or other mechanical systems. In an embodiment, a bearing assembly or apparatus includes a support ring and a plurality of tilting pads. Each tilting pad is tilted and/or tiltably secured relative to the support ring. In some embodiments, one or more of the tilting pads include a plurality of superhard bearing segments assembled to form a superhard bearing surface. One or more seams may be positioned between adjacent superhard bearing segments of the superhard bearing segments. In other embodiments, one or more of the tilting pads may include at least one or only one superhard bearing segment, such as a polycrystalline diamond bearing segment.

Claims (46)

1. A bearing assembly, comprising:

a support ring; and

a plurality of tilting pads each of which is tilted and/or tiltably secured relative to the support ring, each of the plurality of tilting pads including:

a plurality of superhard bearing segments assembled to form a substantially continuous superhard bearing surface, one or more seams positioned between adjacent superhard bearing segments of the plurality of superhard bearing segments.

2. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein the plurality of superhard bearing segments of one of the tilting pads are at least partially interlocked with each other.

3. The bearing assembly of claim 2 wherein the superhard bearing surface of one of the tilting pads comprises a substantially planar geometry.

4. The bearing assembly of claim 2 wherein the substantially continuous superhard bearing surface of one of the tilting pads comprises a substantially non-planar geometry.

5. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein the plurality of superhard bearing segments of one of the tilting pads collectively is generally pie-shaped.

6. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein at least some of the plurality of superhard bearing segments are arranged radially adjacent to each other.

7. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein at least some of the plurality of superhard bearing segments are arranged circumferentially adjacent to each other.

8. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of superhard bearing segments comprises:

a substrate; and

a superhard table.

9. The bearing assembly of claim 8 wherein the superhard table comprises at least one member selected from the group consisting of polycrystalline diamond, cubic boron nitride, and a diamond-silicon carbide composite.

10. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of seams comprises a gap of about 0.001 mm to about 3.5 mm.

11. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of seams comprises a gap of about 0.005 mm up to about 1.0 mm.

12. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of tilting pads comprises a support plate on which the plurality of superhard bearing segments thereof are mounted.

13. The bearing assembly of claim 12 wherein the plurality of superhard bearing segments are brazed to the support plate.

14. The bearing assembly of claim 12 wherein each of the plurality of tilting pads is tiltable about a respective tilt axis.

15. The bearing assembly of claim 14 wherein the tilt axis is a radial axis relative to the support ring.

16. The bearing assembly of claim 14 wherein the tilt axis is substantially parallel to a rotation axis of the support ring.

17. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein each of the tilting pads comprises a fixed tilting pad, an adjustable tilting pad, or a self-establishing tilting pad.

18. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein the plurality of tilting pads are distributed circumferentially around a rotation axis.

19. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein the plurality of tilting pads are distributed circumferentially around a thrust axis.

20. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein the bearing assembly is configured as a thrust-bearing assembly.

21. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein the bearing assembly is configured as a radial bearing assembly.

22. A bearing apparatus, comprising:

a rotor;

a stator;

wherein at least one of the stator or the rotor includes:

a support ring; and

a plurality of tilting pads tilted and/or tiltably secured relative to the support ring, each of the plurality of tilting pads including a plurality of superhard bearing segments assembled to form a substantially continuous superhard bearing surface, one or more seams positioned between adjacent superhard bearing segments of the plurality of superhard bearing segments.

23. The bearing apparatus of claim 22 wherein the other of the stator or rotor comprises a plurality of fixed-position superhard bearing segments distributed circumferentially around an axis and forming a substantially continuous superhard bearing surface.

24. A motor assembly comprising:

a motor operable to apply torque to a rotary drill bit, the motor operably coupled to a bearing apparatus, the bearing apparatus including a rotor and a stator; and

wherein at least one of the stator or the rotor includes:

a support ring; and

a plurality of tilting pads tilted and/or tiltably secured relative to the support ring, each of the plurality of tilting pads including a plurality of superhard bearing segments assembled to form a substantially continuous superhard bearing surface, one or more seams formed and positioned between adjacent superhard bearing segments of the plurality of superhard bearing segments.

25. A bearing assembly, comprising:

a support ring; and

a plurality of tilting pads each of which is tilted and/or tiltably secured relative to the support ring, at least a portion of the plurality of tilting pads including a plurality of polycrystalline diamond elements assembled together to form a substantially continuous superhard bearing surface, each of the plurality of polycrystalline diamond elements exhibiting an average grain size of about 30 μm or less.

26. A method of operating a bearing apparatus, comprising:

rotating a first bearing assembly relative to a second bearing assembly, wherein at least one of the first or second bearing assembly includes:

a support ring; and

a plurality of tilting pads tilted and/or tiltably secured relative to the support ring, each of the plurality of tilting pads including a plurality of superhard bearing segments assembled to form a substantially continuous superhard bearing surface, one or more seams positioned between adjacent superhard bearing segments of the plurality of superhard bearing segments.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein rotating a first bearing assembly relative to the second bearing assembly includes rotating the shaft secured to the support ring using one or more of a pump, motor, compressor, turbine, generator, or gearbox.
