Abstract

A multi-unit blood processor uses a hydraulic bladder system to express blood components out of whole blood bags and into collection bags. A dummy whole blood bag, containing an inert fluid, may be placed in a processing location. The dummy bag has characteristics that allow the blood processor to recognize the presence of the dummy bag. An opaque feature may be detected by a photo sensor. A radio frequency sensor may be used to detect a passive radio frequency emitter on the dummy bag. The dummy bag may have a bar code label identifying it as a dummy bag. The blood processor will not attempt to process the dummy bag.

Claims (15)

1 . A method for separating at least one volume of blood into at least a first component and a second component, comprising:

enclosing in each of at least two separation cells mounted on a rotor either a separation bag containing blood or a dummy bag having a weight approximating a separation bag containing blood, said dummy bag containing no blood or blood components;

storing in at least one container included in the rotor at least one first component bag connected to the at least one separation bag;

determining if any bag in any separation cell is a dummy bag;

rotating the rotor at a sedimentation speed at which the at least first and second components sediment in each of the separation bags containing blood;

transferring at least one fraction of a first separated component from each of the separation bags in separation cells not containing a dummy bag into the at least one first component bags connected thereto respectively.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the step of determining if any bag is a dummy bag further comprises detecting an opaque bag using a photo sensor in the separation cell.

3 . The method of claim 1 wherein the step of determining if any bag is a dummy bag further comprises detecting an opaque tube segment attached to a dummy bag using a photo sensor on the rotor.

4 . The method of claim 1 wherein the step of determining if any bag is a dummy bag further comprises detecting a radio frequency transponder on a dummy bag.

5 . The method of claim 1 wherein the step of determining if any bag is a dummy bag further comprises detecting a bar code on a dummy bag.

A dummy bag for use in a multi-unit blood processing apparatus, said blood processing apparatus having a rotor for centrifugation of blood into blood components and a plurality of processing cells coupled to said rotor, said dummy bag having a weight approximating a separation bag containing blood for use in said multi-unit blood processing apparatus, said dummy bag containing no blood or blood components comprising means for allowing said blood processing apparatus to distinguish said dummy bag from a blood-containing separation bag.

7 . The dummy bag of claim 6 wherein at least part of said dummy bag is opaque.

8 . The dummy bag of claim 6 wherein said dummy bag further comprises stub tubing attached to said bag and said stub tubing is opaque.

9 . The dummy bag of claim 6 wherein said dummy bag comprises a bar code label.

10 . The dummy bag of claim 6 wherein said dummy bag comprises a radio frequency transponder.
