Abstract

A system is disclosed for providing broadcast programming to subscriber locations including an intermediate video supplier, subscriber location equipment and one or more video sources. The intermediate video supplier includes a video buffer and a video server that processes received subscriber requests and retrieves, according to the subscriber requests, either of currently broadcast programming or broadcast programming previously buffered in the video buffer by the video server. The subscriber location equipment includes a remote control and a local control unit that transmits the subscriber requests to the video server via one or more data links and receives, from the video server, the broadcast programming for display on a local video display via the data link. A subscriber may initiate a restart command with a single action via the remote control to restart a currently viewed program from the beginning even if the currently viewed program was joined in progress.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein transmitting a request comprises transmitting a request to fast forward through a first commercial, and wherein receiving the second commercial comprises receiving the second commercial for presentation on the display device while the subscriber fast forwards through the first commercial.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein transmitting a request comprises transmitting a request to restart or replay the recorded video program, and wherein receiving the second commercial comprises receiving the second commercial for presentation on the display device prior to the restart or replay of the video program.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein receiving the second commercial comprises receiving the second commercial with the recorded video program in addition to one or more of the first commercials.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the second commercial is a replacement for a single first commercial during a presentation of the recorded video program on the display device.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the second commercial is a replacement for a plurality of first commercials during a presentation of the recorded video program on the display device.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the second commercial is a replacement for the first commercials when the subscriber fast forwards through the first commercials.
