Abstract

A suspension packaging system can include a foldable member configured to form a cavity as well as a suspension device for suspending an article to be packaged within the cavity. The suspension portion can include foldable portions configured to cooperate with a retention member having pockets. The foldable portions can fit into the pockets and then be folded so as to generate tension in the retention member. The entire device, with the exception of the retention member, can be made from a single piece of material, such as corrugated cardboard, which thus reduces waste and simplifies bulk distribution of such a suspension packaging system.

Claims (29)

1. A foldable board for use in packaging an article, comprising:

a container forming portion comprising a plurality of foldable portions configured to form a container comprising a bottom, a lid and a plurality of sidewalls, each of the plurality of sidewalls extending from the bottom;

an article securing portion pivotably connected to the container forming portion and comprising an article support panel, a first pivotable portion and a second pivotable portion, the article support panel comprising a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface, the article support panel being configured to support an article which is configured to be placed over the first surface, the article support panel being interposed between the first and second pivotable portions, the first and second pivotable portions being pivotably connected to the article support panel; and

wherein the article securing portion is configured to be folded with respect to the container and further configured to be received in the container when folded,

wherein the first and second pivotable portions are configured to be folded toward the second surface, and wherein the first and second pivotable portions are configured to be disposed between the article support panel and the lid when the first and second pivotable portions are folded and the article securing portion is received in the container,

wherein the container forming portion and the article securing portion collectively is of a single piece of cardboard.

2. The foldable board of claim 1 , further comprising an additional panel pivotally connected to the article support panel, wherein the additional panel is configured to be folded with respect to the article support panel, wherein the additional panel is configured to cause the article support panel to be spaced from the bottom when the additional panel is folded and the article securing portion is received in the container.

3. The foldable board of claim 1 , further comprising an additional panel pivotally connected to the article support panel, wherein the additional panel is configured to be folded with respect to the article support panel, wherein the additional panel extends in a direction generally perpendicular to the bottom of the container when the additional panel is folded and the article securing portion is received in the container.

4. The foldable board of claim 1 , further comprising an additional panel pivotally connected to the article support panel, wherein the additional panel is configured to be folded with respect to the article support panel, wherein the additional panel is configured to partition the inside of the container into at least two areas when the additional panel is folded and the article securing portion is received in the container.

5. The foldable board of claim 4 , further comprising an anchor panel pivotally connected to the additional panel.

6. The foldable board of claim 1 , wherein the article support panel is pivotally connected to one of the plurality of sidewalls without an additional foldable portion therebetween.

7. The foldable board of claim 1 , further comprising a retention member coupled to the article securing portion and comprising a body portion and first and second end portions connected to the body portion, wherein the first and second end portions are coupled to the first and second pivotable portions, respectively, such that the body portion extends over the first surface of the article support panel.

8. The foldable board of claim 7 , wherein the retention member holds tension in that folded state of the first and second pivotable portions.

9. The foldable board of claim 8 , wherein the article is configured to be secured between the support panel and the retention member.

10. A packaging device comprising:

a foldable board member, which comprises:

a container portion comprising a plurality of foldable portions configured to form a container comprising a bottom, a lid and a plurality of sidewalls, each of the plurality of sidewalls extending from the bottom;

an article securing portion pivotably connected to the container portion and comprising an article support panel, a first pivotable portion and a second pivotable portion, the article support panel being interposed between the first and second pivotable portions, the first and second pivotable portions being pivotably connected to the article support panel; and

wherein the article securing portion is configured to be folded with respect to the container and further configured to be received in the container when folded,

wherein the first and second pivotable portions are configured to be folded with respect to the article support panel, and wherein the first and second pivotable portions are configured to be disposed between the article support panel and the lid when the first and second pivotable portions are folded and the article securing portion is received in the container,

wherein the foldable board member comprises a single piece of foldable board.

11. The device of claim 10 , wherein the foldable board member further comprises an additional panel pivotally connected to the article support panel, wherein the additional panel is configured to be folded with respect to the article support panel, wherein the additional panel is configured to cause the article support panel to be spaced from the bottom when the additional panel is folded and the article securing portion is received in the container.

12. The device of claim 10 , wherein the foldable board member further comprises an additional panel pivotally connected to the article support panel, wherein the additional panel is configured to be folded with respect to the article support panel, wherein the additional panel extends in a direction generally perpendicular to the bottom of the container when the additional panel is folded and the article securing portion is received in the container.

13. The device of claim 10 , wherein the foldable board member further comprises an additional panel pivotally connected to the article support panel, wherein the additional panel is configured to be folded with respect to the article support panel, wherein the additional panel is configured to partition the inside of the container into at least two areas when the additional panel is folded and the article securing portion is received in the container.

14. The device of claim 12 , wherein the foldable board member further comprises an anchor panel pivotally connected to the additional panel.

15. The device of claim 10 , wherein the article support panel is pivotally connected to one of the plurality of sidewalls without an additional foldable portion therebetween.

16. The device of claim 10 , further comprising a retention member configured to be coupled to the article securing portion and comprising a body portion and first and second end portions connected to the body portion, wherein the first and second end portions are configured to be coupled to the first and second pivotable portions, respectively, such that the body portion extends over the article support panel.

17. The device of claim 16 , wherein the retention member holds tension in that folded state of the first and second pivotable portions.

18. The device of claim 17 , wherein the article is configured to be secured between the support panel and the retention member.
