System and method for providing interoperability between diameter policy control and charging in a 3GPP network
View Patent ↗A system and method are described whereby interoperability is facilitated in a 3GPP network environment in combination with DIAMETER policy controls. Such interoperability enables updated policy rules to be fully communicated in on-line charging situations where quota expirations occur. This invention maintains centralized policy control in a 3GPP network with on-line charging.
1. A method, comprising:
installing within a policy and charging enforcement function (PCEF) system an event filter, wherein the event filter is configured to indicate to the PCEF system to contact the PCRF system upon an OCS event;
notifying, by the PCEF system via a Gy interface, an online charging system (OCS) of a request for more quota;
receiving, by the PCEF system via the Gy interface, a notification of an OCS event from the OCS system;
notifying, by the PCEF system via a Gx interface, the PCRF system of the OCS event; and

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the OCS event includes a breach of a quota.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the event filter is further configured to communicate the identity of the quota breached.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receiving a policy decision includes receiving a new charging rule.
5. A method, comprising:

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the OCS event includes a breach of a quota.
7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the receiving a policy decision includes receiving a new charging rule.
8. A method, comprising:
receiving, by an online charging system (OCS) via a Gy interface, a request for more quota from a policy and charging enforcement function (PCEF) system;
notifying, by the OCS system via the Gy interface, the PCEF system of an OCS event; and
notifying, by the OCS system, the PCRF system of the OCS event.
9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the OCS event includes a breach of a quota.
10. A method, comprising:
installing, by a PCRF system, into a PCEF system an event filter, wherein the event filter is configured to indicate to the PCEF system to contact the PCRF system upon an OCS event;
receiving, by the PCRF system via a Gx interface, of the OCS event from the PCEF system; and
returning, by the PCRF system via the Gx interface, to the PCEF system a policy decision.
11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the OCS event includes a breach of a quota.
12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the event filter is further configured to communicate the identity of the quota breached.
13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the returning a policy decision includes returning a new charging rule.
14. A method, comprising:
receiving, by a PCRF system, of an OCS event from an OCS system;
sending, by the PCRF system via a Gx interface, a policy decision to the PCEF system in response to the received OCS event; and
receiving, by the PCRF system via the Gx interface, an acknowledgement of receipt of the policy decision from the PCEF system.
15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the OCS event includes a breach of a quota.
16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the sending a policy decision includes sending a new charging rule.
17. A computer-readable medium containing instructions for controlling at least one processor by a method, comprising:
