Abstract

A method and apparatus for transferring a principal substance applies the principal substance onto a surface and deposits drops of a gating agent onto a first portion of the principal substance applied to the first surface. The depositing of each drop of gating agent is individually controlled. A second portion of the principal substance not covered by the gating agent is transferred from the first surface to a second surface. A printing system adapted to transfer principal substance from a first surface to a second surface is also disclosed.

Claims (96)

1. A method of transferring a principal substance, wherein the method comprises the steps of:

applying a principal substance onto a first surface;

depositing drops of a gating agent onto a first portion of the principal substance after the principal substance is applied to the first surface wherein the deposition of each drop is individually controlled and wherein a second portion of the principal substance applied to the first surface is not covered by the gating agent; and

transferring the second portion of the principal substance from the first surface to a second surface.

2. The method of claim 1 , further including the step of cleaning a portion of the first surface after the transferring step.

3. The method of claim 1 , the step of cleaning includes the steps of selectively applying a cleaning agent to portions of the first surface to be cleaned.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the depositing step includes the step of depositing the drops in accordance with a screened pattern.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the depositing step further comprises the step of determining a volume of a drop in accordance with a characteristic of the principal substance.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of depositing a further gating agent wherein the further gating agent facilitates transfer of at least some of the second portions of the principal substance.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises the step of rotating the first surface.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first surface is cylindrical.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of transferring the second portion of the principal substance comprises the step of transferring principal substance to an additional surface that is intermediate the first surface and the second surface.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of applying the gating agent comprises the step of applying one of an aqueous substance and a gel.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of applying the principal substance comprises the step of applying at least one of an ink, a drug, a therapeutic substance, a diagnostic substance, a marking substance other than an ink, a biological material, a biocompatible polymer, an electrically conductive, semiconductive, or insulative substance, a thermally conductive or insulative substance, a functional polymer, an adhesive, a substance comprising 3-D interconnect structures, an optical adhesive, a UV-curing polymer, a light-emitting diode material, and a magnetic material.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first portion comprises a non-image area.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second portion comprises an image area.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first portion comprises a non-image area and the second portion comprises an image area, and wherein the gating agent is adapted to block transfer of the first portion of the principal substance.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the deposition of each drop is separately undertaken from the step of applying the principal substance.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of depositing includes the step of using multiple ink jet heads out of phase with one another.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of depositing includes the step of using an ink jet head having multiple channels to supply the gating agent via each channel either at a plurality of same times or at different times during a production sequence.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the steps of applying, depositing, and transferring are repetitively undertaken a plurality of times during a plurality of imaging cycles and further including the step of selectively cleaning portions of the surface where image changes occur between imaging cycles.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of depositing includes the step of using multiple ink jet heads that produce different drop sizes.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of depositing includes the step of using multiple ink jet heads produced by different manufacturers.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transferring step comprises the step of depositing principal substance on a print medium.

22. An apparatus for transferring a principal substance, comprising:

a surface;

an application apparatus for applying a principal substance to the surface;

a depositing apparatus for depositing a gating agent on top of the principal substance wherein at least one portion of the principal substance is not covered by the gating agent; and

means distinct from the depositing apparatus for transferring the at least one portion of the principal substance not covered by the gating agent from the surface to a print medium.

23. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the surface rotates.

24. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the surface is cylindrical.

25. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the transferring means comprises means for transferring the at least one portion of the principal substance to an additional surface that is intermediate the surface and the print medium.

26. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the depositing apparatus deposits a gating agent that comprises an aqueous substance.

27. The apparatus of claim 22 , further comprising a controller for controlling the depositing apparatus.

The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the principal substance comprises at least one of an ink, a drug, a therapeutic substance, a diagnostic substance, a marking substance other than an ink, a biological material, a biocompatible polymer, an electrically conductive, semiconductive, or insulative substance, a thermally conductive or insulative substance, a functional polymer, an adhesive, a substance comprising 3-D interconnect structures, an optical adhesive, a UV-curing polymer, a light-emitting diode material, and a magnetic material.

29. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the depositing apparatus comprises multiple ink jet heads that are operated out of phase with one another.

30. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the depositing apparatus comprises an ink jet head having multiple channels, wherein the ink jet head is operated to supply gating agent via each channel either at a plurality of same times or at different times during a production sequence.

31. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the apparatus is operable during a plurality of imaging cycles and further including means for selectively cleaning portions of the surface where image changes occur between imaging cycles.

32. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the depositing apparatus comprises multiple ink jet heads that produce different drop sizes.

33. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the depositing apparatus comprises multiple ink jet heads produced by different manufacturers.

34. A method of printing, comprising the steps of:

moving a surface through a plurality of passes; and

during each pass of the surface

applying a principal substance to the surface,

covering selected first portions of the principal substance with a gating agent, wherein second portions of the principal substance are not covered with the gating agent, and

contacting with a print medium both (a) the gating agent covering the principal substance and (b) the second portions, thereby transferring substantially only the second portions of the principal substance to the print medium wherein the print medium with the second portions transferred thereto is an end product.

The method of claim 34 , wherein the contacting step further includes the step of transporting the gating agent covering the first portions and second portions of the principal substance toward a further surface and the further surface and gating agent are selectively charged with a same polarity.

36. The method of claim 35 , wherein the further surface is cylindrical and selectively charged internally.

37. The method of claim 34 , wherein the gating agent is non-aqueous.

38. The method of claim 34 , wherein the method includes the step of modifying the gating agent in accordance with a characteristic of the principal substance.

39. The method of claim 34 , wherein the moving step comprises the step of rotating the surface a plurality of times.

40. The method of claim 39 , wherein the surface is cylindrical.

41. The method of claim 34 , wherein the covering step comprises the step of applying a gating agent that substantially blocks transfer of at least some of the first portions of the principal substance.

42. The method of claim 34 , further comprising the step of applying a further gating agent to the second portions of the principal substance to facilitate transfer of at least some of the second portions of the principal substance.

43. The method of claim 42 , wherein the further gating agent has a first electrical polarity and the step of contacting comprises a further step of selectively charging a further surface opposite the surface with a second polarity opposite the first electrical polarity.

44. The method of claim 43 , wherein the surface is a surface of a cylinder and the step of selectively charging selectively charges the surface from inside the cylinder.

45. The method of claim 34 , wherein the step of contacting comprises the step of transferring principal substance to a transfer member that is intermediate the surface and the print medium.

46. The method of claim 34 , wherein the step of covering the selected first portions comprises the step of applying an aqueous substance.

47. The method of claim 34 , wherein the step of covering the selected first portions comprises the step of applying a gel.

48. The method of claim 34 , further including the step of depositing additional gating agent on the surface before the step of applying the principal substance to the surface during each pass of the surface.

49. The method of claim 34 , wherein the method further comprises the step of cleaning the surface, a transfer member downstream of the surface, or a combination thereof.

50. The method of claim 49 , wherein the step of cleaning comprises the step of removing principal substance.

51. The method of claim 49 , wherein the step of cleaning comprises the step of removing gating agent.

The method of claim 34 , wherein the step of applying the principal substance comprises the step of applying at least one of an ink, a drug, a therapeutic substance, a diagnostic substance, a marking substance other than an ink, a biological material, a biocompatible polymer, an electrically conductive, semiconductive, or insulative substance, a thermally conductive or insulative substance, a functional polymer, an adhesive, a substance comprising 3-D interconnect structures, an optical adhesive, a UV-curing polymer, a light-emitting diode material, and a magnetic material.

The method of claim 34 , further including the step of applying additional gating agent to the surface before the principal substance is applied to the surface wherein the additional gating agent is applied in areas of the surface other than where the first portions cover the principal substance.

54. The method of claim 34 , wherein the step of covering includes the step of using multiple ink jet heads out of phase with one another.

55. The method of claim 34 , wherein the step of covering includes the step of using an ink jet head having multiple channels to supply the gating agent via each channel either at a plurality of same times or at different times during a production sequence.

56. The method of claim 34 , further including the step of selectively cleaning portions of the surface where at least one image change occurs between passes.

57. The method of claim 34 , wherein the step of covering includes the step of using multiple ink jet heads that produce different drop sizes.

58. The method of claim 34 , wherein the step of covering includes the step of using multiple ink jet heads produced by different manufacturers.

59. A printing system, comprising:

a surface moved through a plurality of passes;

a principal substance applicator that applies a principal substance to the surface;

a gating agent applicator that covers first portions of the principal substance with a gating agent and leaves second portions of the principal substance free of gating agent; and

a transfer system to contact with a print medium both (a) the gating agent covering the principal substance and (b) the second portions to transfer the second portions of the principal substance to the print medium;

wherein the principal substance applicator, the gating agent applicator, and the transfer system operate in sequence during each pass of the surface;

wherein the gating agent substantially blocks transfer of at least some of the first portions of the principal substance; and

wherein the print medium with the second portions transferred thereto is an output of the printing system.

60. The printing system of claim 59 , wherein the surface is cylindrical.

61. The printing system of claim 59 , wherein the surface is rotatable.

62. The printing system of claim 59 , wherein the gating agent is deposited in a pattern on the principal substance.

63. The printing system of claim 59 , wherein the gating agent comprises an aqueous substance.

64. The printing system of claim 59 , wherein the gating agent comprises a gel.

65. The printing system of claim 59 , wherein the surface comprises an outer surface of a plate cylinder.

66. The printing system of claim 65 , further including a blanket cylinder downstream of the plate cylinder that transfers the principal substance from the outer surface of the plate cylinder.

67. The printing system of claim 59 , further including means for depositing additional gating agent on the surface before applying the principal substance to the surface.

68. The printing system of claim 59 , further including means for cleaning the surface, a transfer member downstream of the surface, or a combination thereof.

69. The printing system of claim 68 , wherein the cleaning means comprises means for removing principal substance.

70. The printing system of claim 68 , wherein the cleaning means comprises means for removing gating agent.

71. The printing system of claim 59 , wherein the principal substance comprises at least one of an ink, a drug, a therapeutic substance, a diagnostic substance, a marking substance other than an ink, a biological material, a biocompatible polymer, an electrically conductive, semiconductive, or insulative substance, a thermally conductive or insulative substance, a functional polymer, an adhesive, a substance comprising 3-D interconnect structures, an optical adhesive, a UV-curing polymer, light-emitting diode material, and a magnetic material.

The printing system of claim 59 , wherein the gating agent applicator further applies additional gating agent to the surface before the principal substance is applied to the surface wherein the additional gating agent is applied in areas of the surface other than where the first portions cover the principal substance.

73. The printing system of claim 59 , wherein the gating agent applicator comprises multiple ink jet heads that are operated out of phase with one another.

74. The printing system of claim 59 , wherein the gating agent applicator comprises an ink jet head having multiple channels wherein the ink jet head is operated to supply the gating agent via each channel either at a plurality of same times or at different times during a production sequence.

75. The printing system of claim 59 , wherein the printing system is operable during a plurality of imaging cycles and further comprises means for selectively cleaning portions of the surface where at least one image change occurs between passes.

76. The printing system of claim 59 , wherein the gating agent applicator comprises multiple ink jet heads that produce different drop sizes.

77. The printing system of claim 59 , wherein the gating agent applicator comprises multiple ink jet heads produced by different manufacturers.
