Abstract

An electronic smoking device includes a first sensor for detecting a user's action for smoking, an air inlet, an air flow path extending from the air inlet, a liquid compartment storing a smoking liquid, a dispensing control device configured to selectively dispense the smoking liquid from the liquid compartment, a vaporizing compartment connected to the liquid compartment and the air flow path, a heater located at the vaporizing compartment, a controller configured to activate the heater to vaporize the smoking liquid dispensed from the liquid compartment when the user's action for smoking is detected by the first sensor, and a smoke outlet connected to the vaporizing compartment, wherein an amount of the smoking liquid dispensed by the dispensing control device is responsive to an amount of air flowing in the vaporizing compartment.

Claims (46)

1. An electronic smoking device comprising:

a first sensor for detecting airflow along an air flow path;

a liquid compartment for storing a smoking liquid;

a passive dispensing control device covering both the air flow path and an opening in the liquid compartment, the passive dispensing control device having a micro aperture pattern configured to dispense the smoking liquid from the liquid compartment as airflow is being drawn through the passive dispensing control device;

a heater disposed adjacent the passive dispensing control device; and

a controller configured to activate the heater when the first sensor detects airflow.

2. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 , wherein the passive dispensing control device is connected to the liquid compartment.

3. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 , wherein the passive dispensing control device is disposed upstream from the heater.

4. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 , wherein the passive dispensing control device is configured to dispense the smoking liquid from the liquid compartment upon application of an external influence.

5. The electronic smoking device of claim 4 , wherein the external influence comprises an external force.

6. An electronic smoking device comprising:

a first sensor for detecting a user's action for smoking;

an air inlet;

an air flow path extending from the air inlet;

a liquid compartment storing a smoking liquid;

a vaporizing compartment connected to the liquid compartment and to the air flow path;

a dispensing control device covering both the air flow path and an opening in the liquid compartment, wherein the dispensing control device is configured to passively dispense the smoking liquid from the liquid compartment;

a heater located at the vaporizing compartment;

a controller configured to activate the heater to vaporize the smoking liquid dispensed from the liquid compartment when the user's action for smoking is detected by the first sensor; and

a smoke outlet connected to the vaporizing compartment,

wherein the dispensing control device is configured to dispense an amount of the smoking liquid in response to air flow generated by the user flowing through the dispensing control device and into the vaporizing compartment.

7. The electronic smoking device of claim 6 , wherein the first sensor comprises at least one of: an air flow sensor; an acoustic sensor; a pressure sensor; a touch sensor; a capacitive sensor; an optical sensor; a hall effect sensor; and an electromagnetic field sensor.

8. The electronic smoking device of claim 6 , wherein the controller is configured to limit an amount of the smoking liquid vaporized by the heater per predetermined period of time.

9. The electronic smoking device of claim 6 , wherein the controller is configured to disable the electronic smoking device when an accumulated period of time the heater has been turned on reaches a predetermined value.

10. The electronic smoking device of claim 6 , further comprising a second sensor for detecting at least one of an internal voltage and an internal current of the heater, wherein the controller is configured to adjust a heating operation of the heater based on at least one of the internal voltage and the internal current.

11. The electronic smoking device of claim 6 , further comprising: a rechargeable battery for powering the electronic smoking device; and a charge/discharge protection circuit for the rechargeable battery.

12. The electronic smoking device of claim 6 , wherein the heater comprises a solid state heater.

13. The electronic smoking device of claim 6 , wherein the dispensing control device is directly responsive to the amount of air flowing in the vaporizing chamber.

14. The electronic smoking device of claim 6 , wherein the dispensing control device is connected to the liquid compartment and the heater is disposed adjacent the dispensing control device.

15. An electronic smoking device comprising:

a first sensor for detecting a user's action for smoking;

an air inlet;

an air flow path extending from the air inlet;

a liquid compartment storing a smoking liquid;

a vaporizing compartment connected to the air flow path;

a passive micro liquid screen covering both the air flow path and an opening in the liquid compartment for delivering the smoking liquid, wherein the passive micro liquid screen is configured to selectively dispense the smoking liquid from the liquid compartment to the vaporizing compartment in response to air flowing therethrough;

a heater located at the vaporizing compartment;

a controller configured to activate the heater to vaporize the smoking liquid dispensed from the liquid compartment when the user's action for smoking is detected by the first sensor; and

a smoke outlet connected to the vaporizing compartment;

wherein the passive micro liquid screen comprises a micro aperture pattern, wherein the smoking liquid is dispensed through the micro aperture pattern when air flowing from the air inlet through the vaporizing compartment in response to the user's action for smoking breaks surface tension of the smoking liquid formed at the micro aperture pattern.

16. The electronic smoking device of claim 15 , wherein the first sensor comprises at least one of: flow sensor; an acoustic sensor; a pressure sensor; a touch sensor; a capacitive sensor; an optical sensor; a hall effect sensor; and an electromagnetic field sensor.

17. The electronic smoking device of claim 15 , wherein the controller is configured to limit an amount of the smoking liquid vaporized by the heater per predetermined period of time.

18. The electronic smoking device of claim 15 , wherein the controller is configured to disable the electronic smoking device when an accumulated period of time the heater has been turned on reaches a predetermined value.

19. The electronic smoking device of claim 15 , further comprising a second sensor for detecting at least one of an internal voltage and an internal current of the heater, wherein the controller is configured to adjust a heating operation of the heater.

20. The electronic smoking device of claim 15 , further comprising: a rechargeable battery for powering the electronic smoking device; and a charge/discharge protection circuit for the rechargeable battery.

21. The electronic smoking device of claim 15 , wherein the heater comprises a solid state heater.
