Abstract

An applicator for a microprojection array is described. In one embodiment, the applicator comprises an energy-storing element. Application of force causes the compressed energy-storing element to extend or transition from first and second configurations, releasing stored energy to deploy a holding member in the application which is configured to hold an array of microprojections. In another embodiment, the applicator comprises an energy storing element with two stable configurations, a first stable configuration and second stable configuration. Application of force causes the energy-storing element to transition from the higher energy first stable configuration to the lower energy second stable configuration, releasing the difference in energies of the two states to deploy a holding member in the application which is configured to hold an array of microprojections.

Claims (25)

1. An applicator, comprising:

a housing having at least one opening and a projection;

an actuating member having an external surface for application of a force and being movable between a first position and a second position;

a push member having a proximal end including a projection that can be retained by the housing projection;

an energy-storing element having a first configuration and second configuration, the energy-storing element being positioned between a lower surface of the housing and a proximal end of the push member; and

a skin-contacting member positioned in contact with a distal end of the housing;

wherein application of force to the actuating member moves the actuating member from the first position to the second position, thereby to effect release of the push member and corresponding release of the energy-storing element from the first configuration to the second configuration.

2. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the housing is manufactured from a rigid material.

3. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein in its first position the actuator member extends from an upper surface of the housing.

4. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the actuator member moves within the housing between a first position and a second position, wherein in its first position the actuator member is recessed within the housing.

5. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein a microprojection array is attached to a distal surface of the push member, the microprojection array comprises a base, and the level of the microprojection array's base is below a skin-contacting surface of the skin-contacting member following actuation of the actuating member.

6. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the energy-storing element is in mechanical communication with the push member when the energy-storing element is in its first configuration.

7. A device comprising an applicator according to claim 1 and a microprojection array comprising an active agent.

8. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the energy-storing element is an elastic energy element.

9. The applicator of claim 8 , wherein the elastic energy element is a compression spring.

10. The applicator of claim 9 , wherein the compression spring is a wave spring.

11. The applicator of claim 1 , wherein the skin-contacting member is generally washer-shaped.

12. The applicator of claim 1 , the skin-contacting member further comprises an adhesive to secure the housing to a subject.

13. The applicator of claim 12 , further comprising:

a release liner positioned on a distal surface of the adhesive.

14. The applicator of claim 1 , further comprising:

a safety mechanism to prevent movement of the actuating member from the first position to the second position.

15. The applicator of claim 5 , wherein the microprojection array comprises a plurality of dissolvable microprojections.

16. The applicator of claim 5 , wherein the microprojection array includes at least one active agent.

17. The applicator of claim 16 , wherein the active agent is selected from a drug, a protein or peptide, and a vaccine.
