Abstract

The present invention generally relates to devices able to purify fluids electrically that are contained within pressure vessels, as well as to methods of manufacture and use thereof. Liquids or other fluids to be purified enter the purification device and, under the influence of an electric field, are treated to produce an ion-depleted liquid. Species from the entering liquids are collected to produce an ion-concentrated liquid. Increasing the exterior pressure on the device may reduce the pressure difference between the interior of the device and the exterior, which may reduce manufacturing costs or simplify construction.

Claims (16)

1. A system for treating a liquid comprising:

an electrodeionization device comprising a plurality of alternating ion concentrating and ion diluting compartments defined by alternating anion and cation exchange membranes, the plurality of alternating ion concentrating and ion diluting compartments constructed and arranged to provide a non-radial flow having a uniform liquid flow velocity profile in the alternating ion concentrating and ion diluting compartments; and

a vessel surrounding the electrodeionization device and defining a region between the vessel and the electrodeionization device, the region at least partially filled with a material to provide a seal for the electrodeionization device.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein a cross-sectional shape of each of the alternating ion concentrating and ion diluting compartments is a polygon.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the cross-sectional shape of each of the alternating ion concentration and ion diluting compartments is a rectangle.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the ion concentrating and ion diluting compartments comprise an inlet and an outlet at the periphery of the alternating ion concentrating and ion diluting compartments.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the ion concentrating and ion diluting compartments are constructed and arranged to minimize at least one of stagnant liquid flow or dead volume.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the region between the vessel and the electrodeionization device provides uniform fluid flow within the region.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the material filled in the region is at least one of a fluid and a solid.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the material filled in the region applies a pressure to at least a portion of the electrical purification device.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the material filled in the region is a fluid selected from the group consisting of air, nitrogen gas, an oil, a hydrocarbon, an aqueous solution, water, and combinations thereof.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the water is selected from the group consisting of fresh water, salt water, and wastewater.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the material is a polymeric material.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the vessel is a pressure vessel.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the ion concentrating compartments and the ion diluting compartments comprise a resin.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the resin is selected from the group consisting of a cation resin, an anion resin, and an inert resin.
