Abstract

A system and method for scheduling cooperative uplink transmissions in a virtual multiple input multiple output (MIMO) wireless communication environment are provided. More specifically, both random and channel aware orthogonal scheduling techniques for identifying a sub-set of N mobile terminals to provide cooperative uplink transmissions for each transmit time interval are provided.

Claims (36)

1. An apparatus for scheduling cooperative uplink transmissions comprising:

at least one network interface; and

a control system associated with the at least one network interface and configured to:

group a plurality of mobile terminals into either a first group or a second group;

schedule ones of the plurality of mobile terminals in the first group for virtual multiple input multiple output (MIMO) operation and ones of the plurality of mobile terminals in the second group for 1×N diversity operation, wherein N is greater than 1; and

assign at least one sub-channel comprising a plurality of sub-carriers to each mobile terminal in the first group of mobile terminals to be simultaneously used by each mobile terminal in the first group of mobile terminals.

2. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein the control system is further configured to:

select a first mobile terminal from the plurality of mobile terminals based on round-robin scheduling;

if the first mobile terminal is in the first group:

select at least one additional mobile terminal from the plurality of mobile terminals, the first mobile terminal and the at least one additional mobile terminal forming a group of mobile terminals to provide a cooperative uplink transmission; and

assign at least one sub-channel comprising a plurality of sub-carriers to the group of mobile terminals to be simultaneously used by each mobile terminal in the group of mobile terminals; and

if the first mobile terminal is in the second group, assign at least one sub-channel comprising a plurality of sub-carriers to the first mobile terminal to be used by the first mobile terminal for 1×N diversity operation.

3. The apparatus as defined in claim 2 wherein the control system is further configured to randomly select the at least one additional mobile terminal from the plurality of mobile terminals.

4. The apparatus as defined in claim 2 wherein the control system is further configured to:

determine channel transfer functions for a plurality of sub-carriers for each of the plurality of mobile terminals; and

identify the at least one additional mobile terminal based on orthogonality of the channel transfer functions for the first mobile terminal and the channel transfer functions for the at least one additional mobile terminal.

5. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein the control system is further configured to determine channel transfer functions for the plurality of sub-carriers for each mobile terminal in the first group.

6. The apparatus as defined in claim 5 wherein the control system is further configured to identify the at least one additional mobile terminal based on orthogonality of the channel transfer functions for the first mobile terminal and the channel transfer functions for the at least one additional mobile terminal.

7. The apparatus as defined in claim 6 wherein the control system is further configured to identify a first mobile terminal and a second mobile terminal in the first group based on orthogonality of a channel transfer function for the first mobile terminal and a channel transfer function for the second mobile terminal.

8. A method for scheduling cooperative uplink transmissions comprising:

grouping a plurality of mobile terminals into either a first group or a second group;

scheduling ones of the plurality of mobile terminals in the first group for virtual multiple input multiple output (MIMO) operation and ones of the plurality of mobile terminals in the second group for 1×N diversity operation, wherein N is greater than 1; and

assigning at least one sub-channel comprising a plurality of sub-carriers to each mobile terminal in the first group of mobile terminals to be simultaneously used by each mobile terminal in the first group of mobile terminals.

9. The method as defined in claim 8 further comprising:

select a first mobile terminal from the plurality of mobile terminals based on round-robin scheduling;

if the first mobile terminal is in the first group:

select at least one additional mobile terminal from the plurality of mobile terminals, the first mobile terminal and the at least one additional mobile terminal forming a group of mobile terminals to provide a cooperative uplink transmission; and

assign at least one sub-channel comprising a plurality of sub-carriers to the group of mobile terminals to be simultaneously used by each mobile terminal in the group of mobile terminals; and

if the first mobile terminal is in the second group, assign at least one sub-channel comprising a plurality of sub-carriers to the first mobile terminal to be used by the first mobile terminal for 1×N diversity operation.

10. The method as defined in claim 9 further comprising randomly selecting the at least one additional mobile terminal from the plurality of mobile terminals.

11. The method as defined in claim 9 further comprising:

determining channel transfer functions for a plurality of sub-carriers for each of the plurality of mobile terminals; and

identifying the at least one additional mobile terminal based on orthogonality of the channel transfer functions for the first mobile terminal and the channel transfer functions for the at least one additional mobile terminal.

12. The method as defined in claim 8 further comprising determining channel transfer functions for the plurality of sub-carriers for each mobile terminal in the first group.

13. The method as defined in claim 12 further comprising identifying the at least one additional mobile terminal based on orthogonality of the channel transfer functions for the first mobile terminal and the channel transfer functions for the at least one additional mobile terminal.

14. The method as defined in claim 13 further comprising identifying a first mobile terminal and a second mobile terminal in the first group based on orthogonality of a channel transfer function for the first mobile terminal and a channel transfer function for the second mobile terminal.
