Abstract

According to one example embodiment, a radial fusion plate includes a first portion and a fusion portion. The first portion is configured to conform to a dorsal side of a radius bone between a second compartment and a fourth compartment of the radius bone. The fusion portion is distal to the first portion and configured to conform to a scaphoid and a lunate. The first portion includes scaphoid hole and a lunate hole.

Claims (50)

1. A radius fixation plate, comprising:

a first portion configured to conform to a dorsal side of a radius bone between a second compartment and a fourth compartment of the radius bone, the first portion being oriented in a first longitudinal plane and comprising at least one first portion opening configured to receive a first portion fixation device; and

a second portion distal to the first portion and having an elevated portion in spaced relationship to said first longitudinal plane, the second portion configured to conform to the dorsal side of the radius bone and comprising:

a first opening extending through said elevated portion and having a top opening and a bottom opening, said bottom opening being substantially within said first longitudinal plane, wherein said first opening configured to receive a first fixation device along a first axis;

a second opening distal to the first opening and extending through said elevated portion and having a top opening and a bottom opening, said bottom opening being substantially within said first longitudinal plane, wherein said second opening configured to receive a second fixation device along a second axis, wherein the second axis is askew to the first axis; and

a third opening distal to the second opening and extending through said elevated portion and having a top opening and a bottom opening, said bottom opening being substantially within said first longitudinal plane, wherein said third opening configured to receive a third fixation device along a third axis, wherein the third axis is askew to the second axis, wherein the third axis is askew to the first axis,

wherein the bottom openings of said first, second, and third opening are generally aligned within a common plane generally orthogonal to said first longitudinal plane.

2. The radius fixation plate of claim 1 , wherein the first portion is configured to conform to the dorsal side of the radius bone in a third compartment of the radius bone.

The radius fixation plate of claim 1 , wherein the radius bone comprises a surface between the second compartment and the fourth compartment from which a Lister's tubercle has been removed, and the first portion is configured to conform to the surface proximate to the former location of the Lister's tubercle.

4. The radius fixation plate of claim 1 , wherein the second opening is oriented relative to the second portion such that the second axis projects through a subchondral region of the radius bone proximate to the lunate facet when the radius fixation plate is installed.

5. The radius fixation plate of claim 1 , wherein the third opening is oriented relative to the second portion such that the third axis projects through a subchondral region of the radius bone proximate to the scaphoid facet when the radius fixation plate is installed.

6. The radius fixation plate of claim 1 , wherein the at least one first portion opening is an oblong opening.

7. The radius fixation plate of claim 1 , wherein:

the first fixation device comprises a head and a tip opposite the head; and

the first opening is oriented relative to the second portion such that the tip of the first fixation device is distal to the head when received by the first opening.

8. The radius fixation plate of claim 1 , wherein the first axis is oriented at an obtuse angle relative to a bottom surface of the first portion.

9. The radius fixation plate of claim 8 , wherein the first axis is oriented at about a 120 degree angle relative to the bottom surface of the first portion.

10. The radius fixation plate of claim 1 , further comprising a fusion portion distal to the second portion and configured to conform to a scaphoid and a lunate, the fusion portion comprising:

a scaphoid hole configured to receive a scaphoid fixation device, wherein the scaphoid fixation device is configured to traverse the scaphoid hole and engage the scaphoid; and

a lunate hole configured to receive a lunate fixation device, wherein the lunate fixation device is configured to traverse the lunate hole and engage the lunate.

The radius fixation plate of claim 1 , further comprising a spanning portion distal to the second portion, the spanning portion comprising a first spanning portion opening configured to receive a metacarpal fixation device, the metacarpal fixation device configured to traverse the first spanning portion opening and engage a metacarpal bone.

12. The radius fixation plate of claim 11 , further comprising a second spanning portion opening configured to receive a carpal fixation device, the carpal fixation device configured to traverse the second spanning portion opening and engage at least one carpal bone.

13. The radius fixation plate of claim 11 , wherein the first spanning portion opening is not generally coplanar with said first longitudinal plane.

14. The radius fixation plate of claim 11 , wherein the first spanning portion has a dorsal angle relative to the first portion.

15. The radius fixation plate of claim 11 , wherein the spanning portion is angled relative to the second portion such that the spanning portion is oriented towards an ulna bone when the radius fixation plate is installed.

16. The radius fixation plate of claim 15 , wherein the spanning portion is angled between ten and fifteen degrees relative to a longitudinal axis of the first portion.

17. The radius fixation plate of claim 11 , wherein the spanning portion comprises a tapered distal end.

18. A radius fixation plate, comprising:

a first portion configured to conform to a dorsal side of a radius bone in a third compartment of the radius bone, the first portion being oriented in a first longitudinal plane and comprising at least one first portion opening configured to receive a first portion fixation device; and

a second portion distal to the first portion and having an elevated portion in spaced relationship to said first longitudinal plane, the second portion configured to conform to the dorsal side of the radius bone and comprising:

a first opening extending through said elevated portion and having a top opening and a bottom opening, said bottom opening being substantially within said first longitudinal plane, wherein said first opening configured to receive a first fixation device along a first axis;

a second opening distal to the first opening and extending through said elevated portion and having a top opening and a bottom opening, said bottom opening being substantially within said first longitudinal plane, wherein said second opening configured to receive a second fixation device along a second axis, wherein the second axis is askew to the first axis; and

a third opening distal to the second opening and extending through said elevated portion and having a top opening and a bottom opening, said bottom opening being substantially within said first longitudinal plane, wherein said third opening configured to receive a third fixation device along a third axis, wherein the third axis is askew to the second axis, wherein the third axis is askew to the first axis,

wherein the bottom openings of said first, second, and third opening are generally aligned within a common plane generally orthogonal to said first longitudinal plane.

19. A radius fixation plate for use with a radius bone from which a Lister's tubercle has been removed comprising:

a first portion configured to conform to the surface proximate to the former location of the Lister's tubercle, the first portion being oriented in a first longitudinal plane and comprising at least one first portion opening configured to receive a first portion fixation device; and

a second portion distal to the first portion and having an elevated portion in spaced relationship to said first longitudinal plane, the second portion configured to conform to the dorsal side of the radius bone and comprising:

a first opening extending through said elevated portion and having a top opening and a bottom opening, said bottom opening being substantially within said first longitudinal plane, wherein said first opening configured to receive a first fixation device along a first axis;

a second opening distal to the first opening and extending through said elevated portion and having a top opening and a bottom opening, said bottom opening being substantially within said first longitudinal plane, wherein said second opening configured to receive a second fixation device along a second axis, wherein the second axis is askew to the first axis; and

a third opening distal to the second opening and extending through said elevated portion and having a top opening and a bottom opening, said bottom opening being substantially within said first longitudinal plane, wherein said third opening configured to receive a third fixation device along a third axis, wherein the third axis is askew to the second axis, wherein the third axis is askew to the first axis,

wherein the bottom openings of said first, second, and third opening are generally aligned within a common plane generally orthogonal to said first longitudinal plane.

20. A radius fixation plate, comprising:

a first portion configured to conform to a dorsal side of a radius bone between a second compartment and a fourth compartment of the radius bone, the first portion being oriented in a first longitudinal plane and comprising at least one first portion opening configured to receive a first portion fixation device; and

a second portion distal to the first portion and having an elevated portion in spaced relationship to said first longitudinal plane, the second portion configured to conform to the dorsal side of the radius bone and comprising:

a first opening extending through said elevated portion and having a top opening and a bottom opening, said bottom opening being substantially within said first longitudinal plane, wherein said first opening configured to receive a first fixation device along a first axis;

a second opening distal to the first opening and extending through said elevated portion and having a top opening and a bottom opening, said bottom opening being substantially within said first longitudinal plane, wherein said second opening configured to receive a second fixation device along a second axis, wherein the second axis is askew to the first axis; and

a third opening distal to the second opening and extending through said elevated portion and having a top opening and a bottom opening, said bottom opening being substantially within said first longitudinal plane, wherein said third opening configured to receive a third fixation device along a third axis, wherein the third axis is askew to the second axis, wherein the third axis is askew to the first axis and the bottom openings of said first, second, and third opening are generally aligned within a common plane generally orthogonal to said first longitudinal plane; and

a spanning portion distal to the second portion, the spanning portion comprising a first spanning portion opening configured to receive a metacarpal fixation device, the metacarpal fixation device configured to traverse the first spanning portion opening and engage a metacarpal bone.

21. The radius fixation plate of claim 20 , further comprising a second spanning portion opening configured to receive a carpal fixation device, the carpal fixation device configured to traverse the second spanning portion opening and engage at least one carpal bone.

22. The radius fixation plate of claim 20 , wherein the spanning portion comprises a tapered distal end.
