Abstract

According to one example embodiment, a radius fixation plate includes a body portion configured to conform to a radius bone between a first extensor compartment and a second extensor compartment and dimensioned such that the body portion does not violate the first extensor compartment or the second extensor compartment. A first fixation device is configured to traverse through a first opening of the body portion and engage at least part of a radial styloid of the radius bone.

58 . A radius fixation plate, comprising:

a body portion configured to conform to a radius bone between a first extensor compartment and a second extensor compartment and dimensioned such that the body portion does not violate the first extensor compartment or the second extensor compartment;

a first opening through the body portion, the first opening configured to receive a first fixation device, wherein the first fixation device is configured to traverse through the first opening and engage at least part of a radial styloid of the radius bone;

a second opening through the body portion, the second opening configured to receive a second fixation device, wherein the second fixation device is configured to traverse through the second opening and engage at least part of a subchondral region of the radius bone; and

a third opening through the body portion, the third opening configured to receive a third fixation device, wherein the third fixation device is configured to traverse through the third opening and engage at least part of a subchondral region of the radius bone.

59 . The radius fixation plate of claim 58 , wherein the first opening is distal to the second opening and the third opening.

60 . The radius fixation plate of claim 58 , wherein the first opening is oriented relative to the second opening and the third opening such that the first fixation device when installed passes between the second fixation device and the third fixation device when installed.

61 . The radius fixation plate of claim 58 , further comprising a Kirschner wire hole through the body portion.

62 . The radius fixation plate of claim 58 , wherein the body portion comprises an apex region configured to conform to the radius bone proximate to an intersection of tendons in the first extensor compartment and tendons in the second extensor compartment.

63 . The radius fixation plate of claim 58 , wherein the first opening is a threaded opening.

64 . A method for providing fixation to a radial styloid, comprising:

providing a plate between a first extensor compartment and a second extensor compartment of a radius bone such that the plate does not violate the first extensor compartment or the second extensor compartment;

inserting a first fixation device through a first opening of the plate to engage at least part of a radial styloid of the radius bone;

inserting a second fixation device through a second opening of the plate to engage at least part of a subchondral region of the radius bone; and

inserting a third fixation device through a third opening of the plate to engage at least part of a subchondral region of the radius bone.

65 . The method of claim 64 , wherein the first opening is distal to the second opening and the third opening.

66 . The method of claim 64 , wherein the first opening is oriented relative to the second opening and the third opening such that inserting the first fixation device comprises inserting the first fixation device to pass between the second fixation device and the third fixation device when installed.

67 . An ulnar fixation plate, comprising:

a head portion configured to conform to a volar side of an ulnar bone proximate to an ulnar head of the ulnar bone, the head portion comprising

a first head portion opening configured to receive a first fixation device along a first axis, wherein the first head portion opening is oriented relative to the head portion such that the first axis projects through the ulnar bone and projects between a fifth extensor compartment and a sixth extensor compartment when the head portion is positioned proximate to the volar side of the ulnar bone;

a second head portion opening configured to receive a second fixation device along a second axis, wherein the second head portion opening is oriented relative to the head portion such that the second axis projects through the ulnar bone, wherein the second axis is skew to the first axis; and

a shaft portion coupled to the head portion, wherein the shaft portion is configured to conform to the volar side of the ulnar bone proximate to a shaft of the ulnar bone, the shaft portion comprising at least one shaft portion opening configured to receive a third fixation device.

68 . The ulnar fixation plate of claim 67 , further comprising a styloid tip portion coupled to the head portion opposite the shaft portion, wherein the styloid tip portion is configured to conform to the ulnar bone proximate to a styloid of the ulnar bone, the styloid tip portion comprising a styloid tip opening configured to receive a fourth fixation device along a third axis, wherein the styloid tip opening is oriented relative to the styloid tip portion such that the third axis projects through the ulnar styloid.

69 . The ulnar fixation plate of claim 68 , wherein the third axis is skew to the first axis and the second axis.

70 . The ulnar fixation plate of claim 68 , wherein the styloid tip portion is configured so as not to violate the distal radio-ulnar joint.

71 . The ulnar fixation plate of claim 68 , wherein the styloid tip portion is configured so as not to violate the sixth extensor compartment.

72 . The ulnar fixation plate of claim 68 , wherein the styloid tip portion is configured so as not to violate the pronator quadratus muscle

73 . The ulnar fixation plate of claim 67 , wherein the shaft portion comprises at least three openings.

74 . The ulnar fixation plate of claim 73 , wherein the second head portion opening is not collinear with the three openings of the shaft portion.

75 . The ulnar fixation plate of claim 67 , wherein the at least one shaft portion opening is an oblong opening.

76 . The ulnar fixation plate of claim 67 , the head portion further comprising a third head portion opening configured to receive a fourth fixation device along a third axis, wherein the third head portion opening is oriented relative to the head portion such that the third axis projects through the ulnar bone and is approximately coplanar with the second axis.

77 . A method for providing fixation to an ulnar styloid of an ulnar bone, comprising:

inserting a Kirschner wire through the ulnar styloid to provide provisional fixation to the ulnar bone;

providing a plate proximate to the ulnar bone by allowing the Kirschner wire to pass trough a first opening of the plate;

inserting a second fixation device through a second opening of the plate to engage the ulnar bone;

removing the Kirschner wire from the ulnar bone and the ulnar styloid; and

inserting a first fixation device through the first opening to engage the ulnar bone.

78 . The method of claim 77 , wherein inserting the second fixation device comprises inserting the second fixation device through the second opening to engage a head portion of the ulnar bone.

79 . The method of claim 77 , further comprising inserting a third fixation device through a third opening to engage a shaft of the ulnar bone.

80 . The method of claim 77 , wherein the first fixation device is inserted along a first axis projects between a fifth extensor compartment and a sixth extensor compartment of the ulnar bone.

81 . The method of claim 80 , wherein the second fixation device is inserted along a second axis skew to the first axis.
