Abstract

A method for printing a print medium applies ink to a surface and ejects drops of an aqueous solution onto the print medium to define image and non-image areas. The ejection of each drop is individually controlled. Ink from the surface is transferred to the image areas of the print medium. Methods of printing on a web and for printing a printed sheet output of a press are also disclosed.

Claims (53)

1. A method for variable printing, comprising the steps of:

providing a printing cylinder carrying a printing plate having a first area for a variable information to be printed, the entire first area being ink receptive, and a second area containing some ink receptive areas corresponding to a static information to be printed;

applying ink to the first area and the second area of the plate;

applying an aqueous solution to portions of a particular area of a substrate on a controllable point by point basis to define the variable information; and

transferring the ink from the first area of the plate to other portions of the particular area of the substrate that are free of aqueous solution to print the variable information on the substrate and transferring the ink from the second area of the plate to the substrate to print the static information on the substrate;

wherein the applied aqueous solution inhibits transfer of the ink to the substrate.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of applying the aqueous solution is undertaken by an ink jet head.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of applying ink comprises the step of depositing lithographic ink to the first area of the plate.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of transferring the ink comprises the step of passing the substrate through a nip between a blanket and an impression roller.

5. A method of printing, comprising the steps of:

using an ink jet head to apply an aqueous solution on a controllable point by point basis to portions of a first particular area of a substrate;

applying lithographic ink onto a first portion and a second portion of a cylinder of a lithographic printing press;

contacting the first portion of the cylinder with the substrate to print a fixed content at a first area of the substrate and contacting the first particular area with the second portion of the cylinder to transfer lithographic ink from the second portion of the cylinder onto other portions of the first particular area of the substrate that are free of aqueous solution;

using the ink jet head to apply aqueous solution on a controllable point by point basis to portions of a second particular area of the substrate different from the first particular area;

applying lithographic ink onto the first portion and the second portion of the cylinder; and

contacting the first portion of the cylinder with the substrate to print said fixed content at a second area of the substrate and contacting the second particular area of the substrate with the second portion of the cylinder to transfer lithographic ink onto other portions of the second particular area of the substrate that are free of aqueous solution.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein a first page includes the first and first particular areas and a second page includes the second and second particular areas.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first, first particular, second, and second particular areas are disposed on a web.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the substrate includes a portion that is preprinted.

9. The method of claim 5 , wherein the step of applying the lithographic ink comprises the step of applying the lithographic ink to a plate carried on the cylinder.

10. The method of claim 5 , wherein the step of applying the lithographic ink comprises the step of applying the lithographic ink to a blanket carried on the cylinder.

11. The method of claim 5 , wherein the second portion corresponds to at least a halftone dot.

12. The method of claim 5 wherein the first and the first particular areas are associated with a page.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first particular area encompasses all of the variable information to be printed on the page.

14. The method of claim 5 , wherein first portion of the cylinder is ink receptive.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first portion of the cylinder is oleophilic.

16. The method of claim 5 , wherein the substrate comprises paper.

17. The method of claim 5 , wherein the substrate is a sheet.

18. The method of claim 5 , wherein the step of applying lithographic ink onto the first portion and the second portion comprises the step of applying lithographic ink to substantially the entire second portion.

19. The method of claim 5 , further including the step of applying a coating to the substrate.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the coating inhibits the substrate from absorbing at least some of the aqueous solution.

21. The method of claim 5 , further comprising the step of receiving image data, wherein the portions of the first particular area are based at least in part on the image data.

22. The method of claim 5 , wherein the step of using an ink jet head to apply an aqueous solution comprises the step of jetting the aqueous solution onto the substrate.

23. The method of claim 5 , wherein the aqueous solution includes ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, or both.

24. The method of claim 5 wherein the aqueous solution includes a surfactant.

25. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first area corresponds to at least a halftone dot.

26. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first area encompasses all of the variable information to be printed on a page.

27. The method of claim 1 , wherein the entire first area is oleophilic.

28. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second area includes oleophilic areas.

29. The method of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is a web.

30. The method of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is paper.
