Fluorescent dye to improve primer coverage accuracy for bonding applications
A method of visually verifying the application of a primer or adhesion promoter to a surface for optimizing the adhesion of a bonding tape to the surface. A fluorescing agent is mixed with the primer and a light source is emitted on the surface causing the agent to fluoresce when the primer is applied. The technician can then visually verify coverage of the primer. The fluorescing agent does not affect the bonding properties of the bonding tape or affect the aesthetic appearance of the surface or the material being bonded to the surface.
1. A system, comprising:
a radome having a mixture of a fluorescing agent and a primer applied to one or more portions of an inner surface of the radome;
a cup; and
a double-sided bond tape, wherein a first side of the bond tape is applied to the cup and a second side of the bond tape is applied to the one or more portions of the inner surface of the radome to which the mixture is applied.
2. The system of claim 1 wherein the cup comprises a global positioning system antenna seated therein.
3. The system of claim 2 , further comprising a global positioning system antenna cable adhered to the radome by double-sided bond tape.
4. The system of claim 2 , further comprising a global positioning system antenna cable captured under a strap fastened to the radome by double-sided bond tape.
5. The system of claim 1 further comprising an ultraviolet emitting light source adapted to cause the fluorescing agent to fluoresce.
6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluorescing agent permits verification of adequate coverage by the primer of the one or more portions of an inner surface of the radome to which the mixture of fluorescing agent and primer are applied.
7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the radome comprises a polycarbonate material.
8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the bond tape comprises acrylic foam.
9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the primer comprises liquid acrylic.
10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluorescing agent comprises fluorescent whitening agent.
11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mixture of primer and fluorescing agent comprises about 0.2% fluorescing agent.
