Abstract

A rotary valve for distributing ink from an ink source to a media width inkjet printhead, the valve having a body, a shaft rotatably mounted to the body, a channel cylinder arranged on the shaft to be rotatable therewith, the channel cylinder having a channel defined along its circumference, a port cylinder fixed to the body relative to the shaft so as to concentrically and sealingly enclose the channel cylinder, the port cylinder having a plurality of ports defined therethrough along its circumference for respective connection to the printhead and ink source, each port being aligned with a portion of the channel and a selection device for selectively rotating the shaft to establish interconnection between the ports and the channel thereby allowing ink flow between the ports via the channel.

Claims (8)

1. A rotary valve for use in an ink delivery system for an inkjet printhead, the valve comprising:

a body;

a shaft rotatably mounted to the body;

a channel cylinder arranged on the shaft to be rotatable therewith, the channel cylinder having a serpentine groove defined in an outer surface thereof;

an annular manifold fixed to the body relative to the shaft, the annular manifold having an inner annular surface concentrically and sealingly enclosing the channel cylinder, the inner annular surface having a plurality of apertures defined therein, each aperture being connected to a respective port extending from an outer annular surface of the annular manifold; and

a selection device for selectively rotating the shaft to establish interconnection between at least two of said ports via at least part of the serpentine groove.

2. A rotary valve according to claim 1 , wherein the openings are aligned relative to the serpentine groove so that alignment of each opening with a straight portion of the serpentine groove provides interconnection between at least two openings.

3. A rotary valve according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of ports comprises a first port for connection to an ink source, a second port for connection to the printhead, a third port for connection to a bypass ink path which bypasses the printhead on a closed ink flow loop interconnecting the printhead and the ink source, and a fourth port for connection to a gas vent on said closed loop.
