Abstract

A maintenance apparatus for a printhead, the apparatus having a rotatable shaft; a porous material about the shaft; and a mechanism for rotating the shaft so that the porous material rotates against the printhead, the porous material being configured to absorb fluid from the printhead during the rotation.

Claims (17)

1. A maintenance apparatus for a printhead, the apparatus comprising:

a media transport roller for transporting media past the printhead, said media transport roller having a gear wheel;

a drive motor for rotating the media transport roller;

a support having a wiper module liftable from the support, said wiper module comprising:

a rotatable shaft operatively connected to a gear train; and

a porous material about the shaft, the porous material being configured to absorb fluid from the printhead during rotation of the shaft; and

a lift mechanism for lifting the wiper module from the support to position the porous material in proximity of the printhead,

wherein the gear wheel of the media transport roller is configured to operatively engage with the gear train of the wiper module only when the wiper module is lifted from the support, such that rotation of the media transport roller causes rotation of the shaft only when the wiper module is lifted from the support.

2. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the wiper module is arranged so that the gear train contacts the media transport roller gear wheel to commence rotation of the shaft when the wiper module is remote from the printhead.

3. An apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the gear train is mounted on a swing arm, the swing arm being configured to pivot relative to the wiper module so that the gear train remains in contact with the media transport roller gear wheel independent of the lifted position of the wiper module.

4. An apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a compressible core mounted to the shaft, the porous material being provided over the core,

wherein the lift mechanism is configured to position the porous material against the printhead so as to compress the compressible core.

5. An apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the core is formed of extruded closed-cell foam.

6. An apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the porous material is formed of non-woven micro fiber.

7. An apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein the non-woven microfiber is wrapped about the core by a spiralling technique so that at least two layers of the micro fiber are present about the core with an adhesive between the layers.

8. An apparatus according to claim 4 , further comprising a hydrophobic film is disposed between the core and the porous material.

9. An apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the film is formed of a pressure sensitive adhesive.
