Abstract

A coupling for distributing fluid to a printhead, the coupling having a housing, a port plate movably mounted on the housing by a shaft, the port plate having a plurality of ports for receiving respective fluid spouts of the printhead, a seal member mounted on the housing between the housing and the port plate, the seal member having a plurality of seals which align with respective ones of the ports of the port plate and a compression spring mounted on the shaft by a washer so as to be compressed between the washer and the port plate.

Claims (23)

1. A coupling for distributing fluid to a printhead, the coupling being slidably movable within a socket, the coupling comprising:

a housing;

a port plate having a plurality of ports for receiving respective fluid spouts of the printhead and a central aperture;

a seal member positioned between the housing and the port plate, the seal member having a plurality of seals aligned with respective ports of the port plate;

a shaft received in the central aperture of the port plate; and

a compression spring mounted about the shaft, the compression spring being engaged between a first end of the shaft and a surface of the port plate so as to urge the port plate and the seal member against the housing,

wherein the shaft is engaged with the coupling such that movement of shaft causes sliding movement of the coupling, including the port plate, relative to the socket.

2. A coupling according to claim 1 , wherein the seal member is received in a recess of the housing.

3. A coupling according to claim 2 , wherein the seal member has linking portions which link the seals together.

4. A coupling according to claim 3 , wherein the seals are circular and the linking portions define an arc between each seal, and the recess comprises circular recesses into which the circular seals are received and curved recesses between the circular recesses into which the linking portions are received.

5. A coupling according to claim 4 , wherein the recess has slots across the curved recesses which serve to capture and wick away any fluid present in the recess.

6. A coupling according to claim 1 , wherein the shaft comprises a washer fixedly mounted at the first end for engagement with the compression spring.

7. A coupling according to claim 1 , wherein the shaft comprises an abutment feature for engagement with the coupling.

8. A printer comprising a socket having a coupling slidably received therein, the coupling being configured for distributing fluid to a printhead engaged therewith, the coupling comprising

a housing;

a port plate having a plurality of ports for receiving respective fluid spouts of the printhead and a central aperture;

a seal member positioned between the housing and the port plate, the seal member having a plurality of seals aligned with respective ports of the port plate;

a shaft received in the central aperture of the port plate; and

a compression spring mounted about the shaft, the compression spring being engaged between a first end of the shaft and a surface of the port plate so as to urge the port plate and the seal member against the housing,

wherein the shaft is engaged with the coupling such that movement of shaft causes sliding movement of the coupling, including the port plate, relative to the socket.

9. A printer according to claim 8 , wherein the shaft comprises a washer fixedly mounted at the first end for engagement with the compression spring.

10. A printer according to claim 8 , wherein the shaft comprises an abutment feature for engagement with the coupling.

11. A printer according to claim 8 , further comprising a drive mechanism operatively connected to an opposite second end of the shaft.
