Abstract

Novel compounds based on diaminostilbene are provided. The compounds conform to the general structures The compounds are useful as optical brighteners. Compositions, such as laundry compositions, containing such compounds are also provided.

Claims (56)

1. A compound conforming to the structure of Formula (I)

wherein R 1 is carbonyl or sulfonyl;

R 3 is selected from the group consisting of:

(A) hydroxyl;

(B) —O − M + , wherein M + is a positively charged counterion; and

(C) a substituent selected from the group consisting of —OR 6 , —NHR 6 , and —NR 6 R 6 ; wherein R 6 is selected from the group consisting of —R 7 —O—R 8 —R 9 and —R 8 —R 9 ; R 7 is alkyl or aryl; R 9 is hydrogen or alkyl; and R 8 is a divalent substituent selected from the group consisting of:

divalent oligomeric substituents comprising two or more divalent repeating units independently selected from repeating units conforming to the structure of Formula (V)

wherein R 20 and R 21 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aryl, alkoxyalkyl, and aryloxyalkyl;

R 4 and R 5 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkoxy, amino, alkylamino, arylamino, hydroxyalkylamino, morpholino, aniline, alkyl anilino, piperazinyl, piperidinyl, and

a substituent selected from the group consisting of —OR 10 , —NHR 10 , and —NR 10 R 10 ; wherein R 10 is selected from the group consisting of —R 11 —O—R 12 —R 13 and —R 12 —R 13 ; R 11 is alkyl or aryl; R 13 is hydrogen or alkyl; and R 12 is a divalent substituent selected from the group consisting of:

divalent oligomeric substituents comprising two or more divalent repeating units independently selected from repeating units conforming to the structure of Formula (V)

wherein R 20 and R 21 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aryl, alkoxyalkyl, and aryloxyalkyl; and

wherein R 3 is not hydroxyl or —O − M + when R 4 and R 5 are both selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkoxy, amino, alkylamino, arylamino, hydroxyalkylamino, morpholino, anilino, and alkyl anilino.

2. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 8 is a divalent oligomeric substituent comprising two or more monomers selected from the group consisting of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, and butylene oxide.

3. The compound of claim 2 , wherein R 8 is a divalent oligomeric substituent conforming to the structure of one of Formulae (XIII)-(XV)

x, y, and z are integers from 0 to 100, and the sum of x, y, and z is 2 or greater.

4. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 1 is sulfonyl, and R 3 is —NHR 6 .

5. The compound of claim 4 , wherein R 6 is a group conforming to the structure of Formula (II).

6. The compound of claim 4 , wherein R 6 is —R 7 —O—R 8 —R 9 , R 7 is C 1 -C 10 alkyl, R 8 is a divalent oligomeric substituent conforming to the structure of one of Formulae (XIII)-(XV)

x, y, and z are integers from 0 to 100, and the sum of x, y, and z is 2 or greater.

7. The compound of claim 4 , wherein R 6 is —R 8 —R 9 , R 8 is a divalent oligomeric substituent conforming to the structure of one of Formulae (XIII)-(XV)

x, y, and z are integers from 0 to 100, and the sum of x, y, and z is 2 or greater.

8. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 4 is —OR 10 or —NHR 10 .

9. The compound of claim 8 , wherein R 12 is a divalent oligomeric substituent comprising three or more monomers selected from the group consisting of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, and butylene oxide.

10. The compound of claim 9 , wherein R 12 is a divalent oligomeric substituent conforming to the structure of one of Formulae (XIII)-(XV)

x, y, and z are integers from 0 to 100, and the sum of x, y, and z is 2 or greater.

11. The compound of claim 8 , wherein R 4 is —NHR 10 , R 10 is —R 11 —O—R 12 —R 13 , R 11 is C 1 -C 10 alkyl, R 12 is a divalent oligomeric substituent conforming to the structure of one of Formulae (XIII)-(XIV)

x, y, and z are integers from 0 to 100, and the sum of x, y, and z is 2 or greater.

12. The compound of claim 8 , wherein R 4 is —NHR 10 , R 10 is —R 12 —R 13 , R 12 is a divalent oligomeric substituent conforming to the structure of one of Formulae (XIII)-(XV)

x, y, and z are integers from 0 to 100, and the sum of x, y, and z is 2 or greater.

13. The compound of claim 8 , wherein R 5 is —OR 14 or —NHR 14 .

14. The compound of claim 13 , wherein R 16 is a divalent oligomeric substituent comprising three or more monomers selected from the group consisting of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, and butylene oxide.

15. The compound of claim 13 , wherein R 5 is —NHR 14 , R 14 is —R 15 —O—R 16 —R 17 , R 15 is C 1 -C 10 alkyl, R 16 is a divalent oligomeric substituent conforming to the structure of one of Formulae (XIII)-(XV)

x, y, and z are integers from 0 to 100, and the sum of x, y, and z is 2 or greater.

16. The compound of claim 13 , wherein R 5 is —NHR 14 , R 14 is —R 16 —R 17 , R 16 is a divalent oligomeric substituent conforming to the structure of one of Formulae (XIII)-(XV)

x, y, and z are integers from 0 to 100, and the sum of x, y, and z is 2 or greater.

17. A compound conforming to the structure of Formula (XX)

wherein R 1 is carbonyl or sulfonyl;

R 3 is selected from the group consisting of:

(A) hydroxyl;

(B) —O − M + , wherein M + is a positively charged counterion; and

(C) a substituent selected from the group consisting of —OR 6 , —NHR 6 , and —NR 6 R 6 ; wherein R 6 is selected from the group consisting of —R 7 —O—R 8 —R 9 and —R 8 —R 9 ; R 7 is alkyl or aryl; R 9 is hydrogen or alkyl; and R 8 is a divalent substituent selected from the group consisting of:

divalent oligomeric substituents comprising two or more divalent repeating units independently selected from repeating units conforming to the structure of Formula (V)

wherein R 20 and R 21 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aryl, alkoxyalkyl, and aryloxyalkyl;

R 50 is —R 51 —R 52 or —OR 10 , provided R 51 is independently selected from the substituents recited above for R 1 , and R 52 is independently selected from the substituents recited above for R 3 ;

R 10 is selected from the group consisting of —R 11 —O—R 12 —R 13 and —R 12 —R 13 ; R 11 is alkyl or aryl; R 13 is hydrogen or alkyl; and R 12 is a divalent substituent selected from the group consisting of:

divalent oligomeric substituents comprising two or more divalent repeating units independently selected from repeating units conforming to the structure of Formula (V)

wherein R 20 and R 21 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aryl, alkoxyalkyl, and aryloxyalkyl; and

wherein R 3 is not hydroxyl or —O − M + when R 52 is either hydroxyl or —O − M + , and R 52 is not hydroxyl or —O − M + when R 3 is either hydroxyl or —O − M + .

18. The compound of claim 17 , wherein R 8 is a divalent oligomeric substituent comprising two or more monomers selected from the group consisting of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, and butylene oxide.

19. The compound of claim 18 , wherein R 8 is a divalent oligomeric substituent conforming to the structure of one of Formulae (XIII)-(XV)

x, y, and z are integers from 0 to 100, and the sum of x, y, and z is 2 or greater.

20. The compound of claim 17 , wherein R 1 is sulfonyl, R 3 is hydroxyl or —O − M + , and R 50 is —OR 10 .

21. The compound of claim 20 , wherein R 10 is —R 12 —R 13 ; R 12 is a divalent oligomeric substituent comprising two or more monomers selected from the group consisting of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, and butylene oxide; and R 13 is hydrogen.

22. A laundry care composition comprising a laundry care ingredient and the compound of claim 1 .

23. A laundry care composition comprising a laundry care ingredient and the compound of claim 17 .
