Abstract

Methods for treating bleeding disorders using non-anticoagulant sulfated polysaccharides (NASPs) as procoagulants are disclosed. NASPs can be administered as single agents, or in combination with one another, or, with other medications (such as factors VII, VIII and IX) to promote hemostasis. In particular, the use of NASPs in treatment of bleeding disorders, including congenital coagulation disorders, acquired coagulation disorders, and trauma induced hemorrhagic conditions is described.

Claims (7)

1. A method of identifying a non-anticoagulant sulfated polysaccharide capable of Factor VII-independent acceleration of blood clotting, the method comprising:

measuring clotting time of a Factor VII-deficient plasma sample;

contacting the Factor VII-deficient plasma sample with a non-anticoagulant sulfated polysaccharide, wherein the non-anticoagulant sulfated polysaccharide is pentosan polysulfate or fucoidin, at a concentration of about 10 nM to about 500 nM;

measuring clotting time of the Factor VII-deficient plasma sample after contacting with the non-anticoagulant sulfated polysaccharide; and

comparing the clotting time before contacting the Factor VII-deficient plasma sample with the non-anticoagulant sulfated polysaccharide with the clotting time after contacting the Factor VII-deficient plasma sample with the non-anticoagulant sulfated polysaccharide, wherein a decrease in clotting time after contacting the Factor VII-deficient plasma sample with the non-anticoagulant sulfated polysaccharide compared to before contacting the Factor VII-deficient plasma sample with the non-anticoagulant sulfated polysaccharide indicates that the non-anticoagulant sulfated polysaccharide is capable of Factor VII-independent acceleration of blood clotting.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the non-anticoagulant sulfated polysaccharide is fucoidan.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the clotting time is decreased by at least one-half or more.
