Abstract

A dual energy x-ray imaging system searches a moving automobile for concealed objects. Dual energy operation is achieved by operating an x-ray source at a constant potential of 100KV to 150KV, and alternately switching between two beam filters. The first filter is an atomic element having a high k-edge energy, such as platinum, gold, mercury, thallium, lead, bismuth, and thorium, thereby providing a low-energy spectrum. The second filter provides a high-energy spectrum through beam hardening. The low and high energy beams passing through the automobile are received by an x-ray detector. These detected signals are processed by a digital computer to create a steel suppressed image through logarithmic subtraction. The intensity of the x-ray beam is adjusted as the reciprocal of the measured automobile speed, thereby achieving a consistent radiation level regardless of the automobile motion. Accordingly, this invention provides images of organic objects concealed within moving automobiles without the detritus effects of overlying steel and automobile movement.

Claims (21)

1. A method of inspecting a vehicle comprising:

acquiring at a computer a dual-energy x-ray image of the vehicle, wherein the dual-image x-ray image consists of a plurality of pixels, each of said plurality of pixels consisting of measured data for each of the dual energies and some number of the plurality of pixels including measured data for steel objects in the vehicle;

calculating at the computer a steel suppressed image wherein a value for steel in each of the some number of the plurality of pixels is removed;

calibrating at the computer the steel suppressed image wherein each of the plurality of pixels is a direct measure of non-steel objects in the vehicle;

determining at the computer boundaries for one or more non-steel objects in the vehicle;

calculating at the computer a mass for each non-steel object from its boundaries and the calibrated steel suppressed image;

comparing at the computer the calculated mass for each non-steel object with a predetermined threshold; and

triggering by the computer an alarm when the comparison for one ore more non-steel objects exceeds the predetermined threshold.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein calculating the steel suppressed image is peformed using logarithmic subtraction.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the logarithmic substraction is carried out in accordance with the following equations:

where XH 0 and XL 0 are the incident intensities of dual-energy x-ray beams, respectively; XH 0 and XL 0 are the intensities of the x-ray beams after passing through the vehicle; μ hi , μ hw , μ li , and μ lw are the mass attenuation coefficients of steel (i) and non-steel (w) at the dual energies, as denoted by the subscripts; and ρ i and ρ w are the densities of steel and non-steel,
