Abstract

Various embodiments of an intubation system include a tracheal tube and an illumination assembly that is removably couplable to a tubular body of the tracheal tube. The tracheal tube may be a double lumen tracheal tube having a first cuff that is adapted to be inflated to seal against the walls of a patient's trachea and a second cuff that is adapted to be inflated to seal against the walls of the patient's bronchial stem. The illumination assembly may have one or more illumination devices that are adapted to produce light within the patient's trachea, the patient's bronchial stem, or both when the illumination assembly is coupled to the tubular body.

Claims (21)

1. An intubation system, comprising:

a tracheal tube comprising a first ventilation lumen having a first distal end and a first proximal end and a second ventilation lumen adjacent to the first ventilation lumen, the second ventilation lumen having a second distal end and a second proximal end, the second distal end not being adjacent to the first distal end, wherein a contiguous dividing wall forming part of and dividing the first ventilation lumen and the second ventilation lumen extends beyond the first distal end to a portion of an exterior wall of the second ventilation lumen, and wherein opposing surfaces of the contiguous dividing wall form at least a portion of respective interior surfaces of the first ventilation lumen and the second ventilation lumen that are in contact with a respiratory gas flow;

a first cuff disposed about the first ventilation lumen and the second ventilation lumen above the first distal end and a second cuff disposed about the second ventilation lumen above the second distal end and below the first distal end;

an imaging device disposed on a collar affixed to an external wall surface of the first and second lumens below the first cuff and proximal to the first distal end, wherein the collar is not in contact with the first cuff, and wherein the imaging device is configured to generate a visual representation of a portion of a patient's airway; and

an illumination assembly coupled to the second ventilation lumen and positioned proximally relative to the imaging device configured to generate light when the illumination assembly is coupled to the tracheal tube and the tracheal tube is disposed in the airway of the patient.

2. The intubation system of claim 1 , wherein the illumination assembly comprises a flexible circuit board having one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs) disposed thereon.

3. The intubation system of claim 1 , wherein the illumination assembly comprises one or more illuminating devices coupled to one or more heat dissipating and/or spreading pads configured to transfer heat from the one or more illuminating devices.

4. The intubation system of claim 1 , wherein the second cuff is a bronchial cuff, and the illumination assembly is coupled to the second ventilation lumen below the bronchial cuff and is configured to direct the generated light into the bronchial cuff to illuminate the bronchial cuff.

5. The intubation system of claim 1 , wherein the illumination assembly comprises one or more illuminating devices encased in a third cuff configured to be inflated to produce a volume between the illuminating devices and a wall of the third cuff.

6. The intubation system of claim 1 , comprising an illumination control system coupled to the illumination assembly via a lumen of the tracheal tube and configured to power the illumination assembly and to control generation of light from the illumination assembly.

7. The intubation system of claim 1 , wherein the tracheal tube comprises a lumen originating from the first proximal end, extending along the tracheal tube, and terminating near the illumination assembly.

8. The intubation system of claim 7 , wherein the lumen is configured to receive at least one of a data cable and a power cable configured to provide data and power to the illumination assembly.

9. An illumination system, comprising:

a tracheal tube comprising a tubular body comprising a contiguous dividing wall that forms part and divides a first lumen and a second lumen, and extends beyond the first lumen to a portion of an exterior wall of the second lumen, wherein opposing surfaces of the contiguous dividing wall form at least a portion of respective interior surfaces of the first ventilation lumen and the second ventilation lumen that are in contact with a respiratory gas flow;

a first cuff disposed about the tubular body, wherein the first cuff is configured to be inflated to seal against the walls of a patient's airway;

an illumination assembly coupled only to the exterior wall of the second lumen between a first distal end and a second distal end, wherein the illumination assembly comprises one or more illumination devices configured to illuminate a patient's airway proximate the first distal end, wherein the first distal end is associated with the first lumen.

10. The illumination system of claim 9 , comprising an illumination control system coupled to the illumination assembly via a lumen disposed in the tubular body and configured to power the illumination assembly and to control generation of light from the illumination assembly.

11. The illumination system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more illumination devices are mounted on a flexible circuit board that comprises one or more copper pads configured to transfer heat from the one or more illumination devices.

12. The illumination system of claim 9 , comprising an imaging device disposed on or about the tubular body proximate to the illumination assembly and configured to generate a visual representation of a portion of the patient's airway.

The illumination system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more illumination devices are encased in a third cuff configured to be inflated to produce a volume between the illuminating devices and a wall of the third cuff without contacting the walls of the patient's trachea or the walls of the patient's bronchial stem.

14. The illumination system of claim 13 , wherein the third cuff is made of polyurethane, silicone, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or a combination thereof.
