Abstract

A real-time audiovisual streaming system transmits audiovisual content over an internetwork from an audiovisual stream source to a plurality of invited viewers. The system includes an application monitor coupled to an internetwork to monitor performance of each of a plurality of streaming servers coupled to the internetwork. The application monitor selects at least one streaming server to receive and broadcast an audiovisual stream over the internetwork, based on its monitoring of the streaming servers. The application monitor also monitors performance of each of a plurality of control servers and selects at least one control server based thereon to establish control with the audiovisual stream source to enable transmission of the audiovisual stream from the audiovisual stream source to the at least one selected streaming server and to establish control with at least one of the plurality of invited viewers to enable the broadcast of the audiovisual stream from the at least one selected streaming server to the at least one invited viewer.

Claims (19)

1 . An apparatus comprising:

an application monitor coupled to an internetwork to:

monitor performance of each of a plurality of streaming servers coupled to the internetwork and select at least one streaming server based thereon to receive and broadcast an audiovisual stream over the internetwork; and

monitor performance of each of a plurality of control servers and select at least one control server based thereon to establish control with an audiovisual stream source to enable transmission of the audiovisual stream from the audiovisual stream source to the at least one selected streaming server and to establish control with at least one of a plurality of invited viewers to enable the broadcast of the audiovisual stream from the at least one selected streaming server to the at least one invited viewer.

2 . The application monitor of claim 1 , wherein the application monitor to monitor performance of each of the plurality of streaming servers and to monitor performance of each of the plurality of control servers comprises the application monitor to monitor processor load for each of the plurality of streaming servers and each of the plurality of control servers.

3 . The internetwork architecture of claim 1 , wherein the application monitor to monitor performance of each of the plurality of streaming servers and to monitor performance of each of the plurality of control servers comprises the application monitor to monitor traffic bandwidth usage for each of the plurality of streaming servers and each of the plurality of control servers.

4 . An internetwork architecture comprising:

a plurality of streaming servers coupled to the internetwork, wherein at least one of the streaming servers is selected to receive an audiovisual stream transmitted over the internetwork from an audiovisual stream source and to broadcast the received audiovisual stream over the internetwork to at least one of a plurality of invited viewers;

a plurality of control servers coupled to the internetwork, wherein at least one of the control servers is selected to establish control with the audiovisual stream source to enable the transmission of the audiovisual stream from the audiovisual stream source to the at least one selected streaming server and to establish control with at least one of the plurality of invited viewers to enable the broadcast of the received audiovisual stream from the at least one selected streaming server to the at least one invited viewer; and

an application monitor coupled to the internetwork to monitor performance of each of the plurality of streaming servers and select the at least one streaming server based thereon and to monitor performance of each of the plurality of control servers and select the at least one control server based thereon.

5 . The internetwork architecture of claim 4 , wherein the application monitor to monitor performance of each of the plurality of streaming servers and each of the plurality of control servers comprises the application monitor to monitor processor load for each of the plurality of streaming servers and each of the plurality of control servers.

6 . The internetwork architecture of claim 4 , wherein the application monitor to monitor performance of each of the plurality of streaming servers and each of the plurality of control servers comprises the application monitor to monitor traffic bandwidth usage for each of the plurality of streaming servers and each of the plurality of control servers.

7 . A method comprising:

monitoring performance of each of a plurality of streaming servers coupled to an internetwork;

selecting at least one streaming server, responsive to the monitoring performance of each of a plurality of streaming servers, to receive an audiovisual stream and broadcast the received audiovisual stream over the internetwork;

monitoring performance of each of a plurality of control servers; and

selecting at least one control server, responsive to the monitoring performance of each of the plurality of control servers, to establish control with an audiovisual stream source to enable transmission of the audiovisual stream from the audiovisual stream source to the at least one selected streaming server and to establish control with at least one of a plurality of invited viewers to enable the broadcast of the received audiovisual stream from the at least one selected streaming server to the at least one invited viewer.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein monitoring the performance of each of the plurality of streaming servers and monitoring the performance of each of the plurality of control servers comprises monitoring the processor load for each of the plurality of streaming servers and each of the plurality of control servers.

9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein monitoring the performance of each of the plurality of streaming servers and monitoring the performance of each of the plurality of control servers comprises monitoring traffic bandwidth usage for each of the plurality of streaming servers and each of the plurality of control servers.
