Abstract

A medical device for assisting a function of the heart is provided. The heart is placed in the thorax, the thoracic diaphragm is dividing the thorax from the abdomen and the pericardium is surrounding the heart and is attached to the thoracic diaphragm at a pericardial contacting section of the thoracic diaphragm. The medical device comprises a diaphragm passing part adapted to pass from the abdomen, through the thoracic diaphragm at the pericardial contacting section, into the pericardium, wherein said diaphragm passing part is adapted to allow the thoracic diaphragm to move during respiration, when implanted.

Claims (18)

1. A medical device for assisting a function of the heart, the medical device comprising a diaphragm passing part adapted to pass from the abdomen, through the thoracic diaphragm at the pericardial contacting section, into the pericardium, wherein said diaphragm passing part comprises a force transferring part adapted to, by motion of the force transferring part, transfer force between the abdominal side of the thoracic diaphragm and the thoracic side of the thoracic diaphragm or the pericardium while sliding against the thoracic diaphragm, said force being at least one of a rotating force and a translating force for operating the medical device.

2. The medical device according to claim 1 , wherein the diaphragm passing part is adapted to assist in the maintaining of the opening created in the thoracic diaphragm by engaging the edges of said, opening.

3. The medical device according to claim 1 wherein the diaphragm passing part is further adapted to be in contact with the pericardium and thereby also assisting in the maintaining of an opening in the pericardium.

4. The medical device according to claim 1 , wherein said rotating force is an eccentrically rotating force.

5. The medical device according to claim 1 , wherein said force transferring part comprises a conduit adapted to transfer hydraulic or pneumatic force.

6. The medical device according to claim 5 , wherein said conduit comprises a first and second portion, said first portion being adapted to be in connection with an operation device adapted to create hydraulic or pneumatic force, and said second portion being adapted to be in connection with a heart help device.

7. The medical device according to claim 6 , wherein said first portion is adapted to be in connection with a hydraulic pump adapted to create hydraulic force.

8. The medical device according to claim 6 , wherein said first portion is adapted to be in connection with a pneumatic pump adapted to create pneumatic force.

9. The medical device according to claim 1 , wherein said force transferring part comprises an electric lead adapted to transfer electric energy.

10. The medical device according to claim 1 , wherein said medical device further comprises a second force transferring part.

11. The medical device according to claim 10 , wherein said first force transferring part is adapted to transfer a first type of force, and said second force transferring part is adapted to transfer a second type of force.

12. The medical device according to claim 11 , wherein said first and second type of force is a type of force selected from a group consisting of:

(a) hydraulic force,

(b) pneumatic force,

(c) rotational mechanical force, and

(d) translational mechanical force.

13. The medical device according to claim 1 , wherein said force transferring part comprises a first and second portion, said first portion being adapted to be in connection with an operation device, said second portion being adapted to be in connection with a heart help device, and said force transferring part being adapted to transfer force from said operation device to said heart help device.

14. The medical device according to claim 1 , wherein the diaphragm passing part comprises a pericardial drainage device for draining a fluid from the pericardium of a patient, and wherein said pericardial drainage device comprises a conduit, said conduit comprising a first and second section, at least a portion of said first section being adapted to receive a fluid inside of said pericardium, and said second section of said conduit being adapted to be positioned in the abdomen of a patient and enable the said fluid received from said pericardium through at least a portion of said second section.
