Abstract

The present invention relates to an implantable device for improving the pump function of the heart of a human patient by applying an external force on the heart muscle. The implantable device comprises at least one implantable pump device comprising: A fluid, A first reservoir having a first volume and at least one movable wall portion, for varying said first volume, and A second reservoir being in fluid connection with said first reservoir. Wherein said implantable pump device is adapted to allow free flow of fluid between said first reservoir and said second reservoir, and wherein said first reservoir, said second reservoir and said fluid connection forms a fully implantable closed pump device, and wherein said fully implantable closed pump device is adapted to transfer force from said first reservoir to said second reservoir.

Claims (55)

1. An implantable device for improving the pump function of the heart of a human patient by applying an external force on a first position of the heart muscle following the heart's contractions, said implantable device comprising a first pump device adapted to assist the pump function of the heart, said pump device comprising:

a first reservoir having a first volume and adapted to varying said first volume,

a second reservoir having a second volume and adapted to varying said second volume,

a fluid connection adapted to fluidly connect said first reservoir with said second reservoir, such that fluid can flow between said first reservoir and said second reservoir, wherein

said first reservoir, said second reservoir and said fluid connection form a fully implantable pump device adapted to maintain a fluid in a closed system, when in operation, and wherein

said fully implantable pump device is adapted to transfer force by transferring fluid from said first reservoir to said second reservoir to directly or indirectly apply an external force on the first position of the heart muscle, following the heart's contractions, for improving the pump function of the heart, when said device is implanted,

wherein said implantable device further comprises:

a sensor that when implanted in the body senses muscle contractions of the heart, and

a subcutaneous injection port for calibrating a fluid level of said fully implantable pump device from the outside of the body of the patient.

2. The implantable device according to claim 1 , wherein said implantable device further comprises a second or more implantable pump device(s) for applying force on a second or more position(s) on the heart muscle comprising:

at least one additional first reservoir having a first volume and adapted to varying said first volume,

at least one additional second reservoir having a second volume and adapted to varying said second volume,

a fluid connection adapted to fluidly connect said first reservoir with said second reservoir, such that fluid can flow between said first reservoir and said second reservoir, wherein

said first reservoir, second reservoir and said fluid connection form a fully implantable pump device adapted to maintain a fluid in a closed system, when in operation, and wherein

said fully implantable pump device is adapted to transfer force by transferring fluid from said at least one first reservoir to said at least one second reservoir to directly or indirectly apply an external force on the at least second position of the heart muscle for improving the pump function of the heart, when said device is implanted.

3. The implantable device according to claim 1 , wherein said pump device comprises:

one or more additional second reservoir(s) being in fluid connection with said first reservoir,

at least one valve adapted to have different valve positions, and adapted to be placed in the fluid connection between said first reservoir and said second and said one or more additional second reservoir(s), wherein said valve is adapted to connect said first reservoir with at least one of the second reservoir and said one or more additional second reservoir(s), wherein

said reservoirs and said fluid connections forms a fully implantable pump device adapted to maintain a fluid in a closed system, when in operation, and wherein said pump device is adapted to transfer force by transferring fluid from said first reservoir to one or more additional second reservoirs to directly or indirectly apply an external force on the second or more positions of the heart muscle for improving the pump function of the heart, depending on the position of the valve, when said device is implanted.

4. The implantable device according to claim 1 , wherein said pump device comprises at least one of:

at least one movable piston, for varying said first volume or second volume, and

at least one movable wall of said first and second reservoir for varying said first volume or second volume.

5. The implantable device according to claim 3 , wherein at least one of said second reservoirs is adapted to operate on a first part of the heart, and said one or more further second reservoirs is adapted to operate on a second or more parts of the heart.

6. The implantable device according to claim 1 , wherein said first pump device is adapted to operate on a first part of the heart, and wherein said second pump device is adapted to operate on a second part of the heart.

7. The implantable device according to claim 1 , wherein said second reservoir is in connection with a heart contacting organ, affecting the heart muscle movement.

8. The implantable device according to claim 7 , wherein said heart contacting organ comprises at least one of:

a an arm,

b a replaceable arm,

c circular plates, and

d rectangular plates.

9. The implantable device according to claim 1 , wherein said implantable pump device is operated in a first and an opposite direction.

10. The implantable device according to claim 9 , wherein said implantable pump device is operated by pressurized fluid in said first direction and by vacuum in said opposite direction.

11. The implantable device according to claim 9 , wherein said implantable pump device is operated by pressurized fluid in said first direction and by pressurized fluid in said opposite direction.

12. The implantable device according to claim 9 , wherein said implantable pump device is operated using at least one of:

a motor,

an electrical motor,

a servo motor,

a hydraulic motor, and

a pneumatic motor.

The implantable device according to claim 1 , comprising an operation device and a control unit, wherein the operating device and other elements of the implantable device that require control are controlled by the control unit that is adapted to communicate with the pump device and the other elements of the implantable device through a connecting member or wirelessly.

14. The implantable device according to claim 1 , further comprising a control unit adapted to receive input from the sensor relating to the muscle contractions of the heart, for controlling the heart contractions to coordinate with the pump device.

The implantable device according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one electrode supplying an electric signal for controlling the heart's rhythm, such as a pace maker signal, further comprising an internal control unit is adapted to transmit energy pulses to said electrode for achieving heart muscle contractions and controlling heart contractions, such that the movements of the pump device can be additionally coordinated with the heart's contractions.

The implantable device according to claim 1 , wherein the pump device is adapted to be placed on an adjustment system, comprising a first fixation member, and said pump device is adapted to be fixated to a bone of the patient by said first fixation member, and wherein said first fixation member is adapted to be involved in adjusting the position of the pump device.

17. The implantable device according to claim 16 , further comprising a second fixation member adapted to be adjustable in relation to the first fixation member to adjust the position of the pump device.

18. The implantable device according to claim 17 , further comprising a third fixation member, adapted to further adjust the position of the pump device, wherein the pump device is adapted to be adjusted in three dimensions, and thereby change the position of the force exerted on the heart.

The implantable device according to claim 1 , wherein the implantable device is adapted to be part of a system including an internal energy receiver, adapted to be energized non-invasively and wirelessly by an energy transmission device from outside the patient's body, adapted for sending wireless energy to at least one of:

an implantable internal energy source according to any one of the preceding claims, being chargeable by the energy transferred from the energy transmission device, and

at least one implantable energy consuming component of the apparatus energized with the wireless energy.

The implantable device according to claim 1 , wherein the implantable device is adapted to be part of a system including a sensor and/or a measuring device, adapted to sense or measure at least one of: at least one physical parameter of the patient, and at least one functional parameter related to the apparatus, comprising at least one of:

a functional parameter correlated to the transfer of energy for charging an internal energy source, and

any other functional parameter related to the apparatus, wherein the apparatus further comprises a feedback device for sending feedback information from inside the patient's body to at least one of:

an implantable internal control unit, and

outside of the patient's body, wherein the feedback information is related to at least one of:

the at least one physical parameter of the patient, and

the at least one functional parameter related to the apparatus.
