SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR SELECTING DISPLAY MODES
A field sequential display includes at least two lamps which output different colors and a controller. The controller is configured for receiving information from a host device in which the field sequential display is incorporated, selecting, based on the received information, a display mode from a plurality of preset display modes, and outputting signals indicating brightness levels with which to illuminate the at least two lamps based on the selected display mode.
1 . A field sequential display comprising:
at least two lamps which output different colors,
a controller configured for:
receiving information from a host device in which the field sequential display is incorporated;
selecting, based on the received information, a display mode from a plurality of preset display modes; and
outputting signals indicating brightness levels with which to illuminate the at least two lamps based on the selected display mode.
2 . The field sequential display of claim 1 , comprising an array of light modulators, wherein the processor is configured to regulate drive signals applied to the array at times determined based on the selected display mode.
3 . The field sequential display of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to select the display mode by identifying a display mode that consumes less power in comparison to at least one other display mode of the plurality of preset display modes.
4 . The field sequential display of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of preset display modes has an associated plurality of imaging characteristics, and wherein each of the plurality of preset display modes includes a unique combination of imaging characteristic values.
5 . The field sequential display of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of imaging characteristics includes at least a color gamut.
6 . The field sequential display of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of imaging characteristics includes at least a number of bit levels used in the display mode to display colors.
7 . The field sequential display of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of imaging characteristics includes at least a level of gamma correction.
8 . The field sequential display of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of imaging characteristics includes at least a frame rate.
9 . The field sequential display of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of imaging characteristics includes at least a resolution characteristic.
10 . The field sequential display of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of imaging characteristics includes at least a brightness level.
11 . The field sequential display of claim 1 , wherein the information received from the host device based on which the controller selects the display mode comprises raw image data.
12 . The field sequential display of claim 1 , wherein the information received from the host device based on which the controller selects the display mode comprises an identifier of a type of image to be displayed.
13 . The field sequential display of claim 1 , wherein the information received from the host device based on which the controller selects the display mode comprises an identifier of the display mode.
14 . The field sequential display of claim 1 , wherein the information received from the host device based on which the controller selects the display mode comprises an identifier of a user mode selected by a user of the host device.
15 . The field sequential display of claim 1 , wherein the information received from the host device based on which the controller selects the display mode comprises an identifier of a type of content to be displayed.
16 . The field sequential display of claim 1 , wherein the information received from the host device based on which the controller selects the display mode comprises an identifier of a device operating mode.
17 . The field sequential display of claim 1 , wherein the information received from the host device based on which the controller selects the display mode comprises at least two of raw image data, an identifier of a type of image to be displayed, an identifier of a user mode selected by a user of the host device, an identifier of a type of content to be displayed, and an identifier of a device operating mode.
18 . The field sequential display of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to receive the information from the host device according to a predetermined codec.
19 . The field sequential display of claim 1 , wherein selecting a display mode comprises selecting a combination of the plurality of display modes.
20 . The field sequential display of claim 1 , comprising a memory for storing the plurality of preset image modes.
