Abstract

A patient hydration method includes administering hydration fluid to a patient, and a hydration fluid measurement device responsible to a source of hydration fluid, a patient urine output measurement device. A controller is responsive to the hydration fluid measurement device and the patient urine output measurement device. The controller operates the infusion device, in response to the patient urine output measurement device and the hydration fluid measurement device, to hydrate the patient based on the patient's urine output.

Claims (29)

1. A method comprising:

collecting urine expelled by the patient,

measuring the collected urine expelled, and

automatically infusing the patient with a fluid at a rate which is the function of the measured urine expelled;

administering a diuretic to the patient to induce increased urine flow expelled by the patient;

collecting the urine expelled by the patient;

measuring the collected urine expelled;

automatically infusing the patient with a hydration fluid at a rate which is a function of the measured urine expelled to maintain an increased urine flow;

then injecting the patient with a toxic agent; and

continuing to a) collect urine expelled by the patient, b) measure the collected urine expelled, and c) automatically infuse the patient with the hydration fluid at a rate which is a function of the measured urine expelled to drive the toxic agent through the patient's kidneys for a therapy duration.

2. The method of claim 1 in which automatically infusing includes balancing the fluid infused with the urine expelled.

3. The method of claim 2 in which balancing occurs every 15 minutes or less for the therapy duration.

4. The method of claim 1 in which collecting urine expelled by the patient includes catheterizing the patient.

5. The method of claim 4 in which catheterizing the patient includes inserting a urinary catheter in the urinary tract of the patient.

6. The method of claim 1 in which measuring the collected urine expelled includes weighing the urine expelled in a urine collection bag and providing an indication when the urine collection bag has reached its capacity.

7. The method of claim 1 in which automatically infusing the patient with a hydration fluid includes providing an indication when a hydration fluid source is low on fluid.

8. A method comprising:

administering a diuretic to a patient to induce increased urine flow expelled by the patient;

setting a desired fluid balance;

collecting urine expelled by the patient in a urine collection bag;

weighing the urine collection bag;

employing a pump to infuse the patient with hydration fluid from a hydration fluid source;

weighing the hydration fluid source; and

automatically adjusting the pump based on the weight of the urine collection bag and the weight of the hydration fluid source and controlling the amount of hydration fluid infused into the patient based on the amount of urine expelled by the patient and the set desired fluid balance;

then injecting the patient with a toxic agent; and

continuing to collect urine expelled by the patient in the urine collection bag, weighing the urine collection bag, employing the pump to infuse the patient with hydration fluid from the hydration fluid source, weighing the hydration fluid source, and automatically adjusting the pump based on the weight of the urine collection pump and the weight of the hydration fluid source and controlling the amount of hydration fluid infused into the patient based on the amount of urine expelled by the patient and the set desired fluid balance for a therapy duration to drive the toxic agent through the patient's kidneys.

The method of claim 8 in which collecting urine expelled by the patient, weighing the urine collection bag, employing the pump to infuse the patient with hydration fluid from the fluid source, weighing the fluid source, and automatically adjusting the pump based on the weight of the urine collection bag and the weight of the hydration fluid source and controlling the amount of hydration fluid infused into the patient based on the amount of urine expelled by the patient and the set desired fluid balance occurs, in addition, before administering the diuretic to the patient.

10. The method of claim 8 in which automatically adjusting occurs every 15 minutes or less for the therapy duration.

11. The method of claim 8 in which automatically adjusting further includes providing an indication when the hydration fluid source is low on fluid based on the weight of the hydration fluid source.
