Abstract

An automated banking machine transaction request is authorized based on the determined location of an authorized user relative to the machine. Identification of an authorized machine user is linked to a remotely locatable item (e.g., a cell phone) of the authorized user. A machine receiving the user identification causes the location of the cell phone to be determined. A comparison is then made of the cell phone location and the machine location. If the locations correspond, then the current machine user is recognized as the authorized user and machine transactions are permitted. If the locations do not correspond, then the current user is denied transactions at the machine. The security arrangement helps prevent an unauthorized person from using a fraudulent machine card to access a financial account.

Claims (68)

1. A method comprising:

(a) operating at least one computer responsive at least in part to user data read by at least one reader device of a self-service automated banking machine,

wherein the machine includes a cash dispenser, and

wherein the user data is usable to identify a financial account,

to

(ai) determine machine location data corresponding to location of the machine, and

(aii) determine vehicle location data corresponding to current location of at least one vehicle linked in at least one data store to the financial account;

(b) responsive at least in part to location correspondence between

the machine location data determined in (ai), and

the vehicle location data determined in step (aii),

authorizing a transaction that involves the cash dispenser and the financial account.

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the automated banking machine is part of a banking system,

wherein the machine includes a cash dispenser,

wherein the at least one reader device includes both

a card reader, and

a biometric reader,

wherein the at least one computer is operative during a user transaction session to

cause card data to be read through operation of the card reader, and

cause biometric data to be read through operation of the biometric reader,

and further comprising:

(c) operating the card reader to read card data;

(d) operating the biometric reader to read biometric data; and

(e) operating the at least one computer to authorize the user to request the transaction involving the cash dispenser, responsive at least in part to both

computer-determined correspondence between the card data read in (c) and stored card information, and

computer-determined correspondence between the biometric data read in (d) and stored biometric information.

3. The method according to claim 1 wherein (b) includes determining whether the at least one vehicle is within a predetermined proximity to the machine.

4. The method according to claim 3 wherein the vehicle location data comprises GPS location data, and wherein (aii) includes determining a GPS location of the at least one vehicle.

5. The method according to claim 4 wherein the machine location data comprises a GPS location of the machine, wherein (ai) includes determining a GPS location of the machine, and wherein (b) includes comparing the GPS location of the machine and the GPS location of the at least one vehicle.

6. The method according to claim 3 wherein (ai) includes determining a location of the machine based on a serial number associated with the machine.

7. The method according to claim 3 wherein the machine is associated with a vehicle drive through lane, wherein (aii) includes determining whether identifying data associated with the financial account, can be read from a vehicle located in the drive through lane.

8. The method according to claim 7 wherein the machine includes an RFID reader, wherein (aii) includes determining whether RFID data can be read from a vehicle located in the drive through lane through operation of the RFID reader.

9. A method comprising:

(a) operating an automated banking machine system to read user data inputted by a user of the machine system,

wherein the machine system includes at least one data reader,

wherein the machine system is associated with a vehicle drive through lane,

wherein the user data is associated in at least one data store with account data corresponding to a financial account,

wherein the account data is associated in the at least one data store with vehicle identifying data;

(b) operating the machine system to read identifier data from a vehicle located in the vehicle drive through lane; and

(c) operating the machine system to allow the user to carry out a transaction involving the financial account, responsive at least in part to a determination that the identifier data read in (b) corresponds to the vehicle identifying data.

10. The method according to claim 9 wherein the machine system includes a cash dispenser, wherein (c) includes allowing the user to carry out a transaction that involves the cash dispenser and the financial account.

11. The method according to claim 9 and further comprising:

(d) prior to (c), operating at least one computer to determine that the identifier data read in (b) corresponds to the vehicle identifying data.

12. The method according to claim 11 and further comprising:

(e) operating at least one computer responsive at least in part to (d), to verify the user as an authorized user of the financial account.

13. The method according to claim 9 and further comprising:

(d) operating the machine system to compare the user data read in (a) to the identifier data read in (b);

wherein (c) is responsive to a positive comparison in (d).

14. The method according to claim 9 wherein at least one of (a) and (b) includes reading RFID data through operation of at least one RFID reader of the machine system.

15. A method comprising:

(a) operating at least one computer to determine whether a vehicle that is linked in at least one data store with a financial account, is located adjacent to an automated banking machine;

(b) operating the at least one computer to either:

(bi) approve a transaction that would involve the machine and the account, responsive at least in part to a positive determination in (a); or

(bii) disapprove a transaction that would involve the machine and the account, responsive at least in part to a negative determination in (a).

16. The method according to claim 15 and further comprising:

(c) prior to (a), operating the at least one computer to receive from the machine, read card data that comprises identifying data usable to identify the financial account;

(d) operating the at least one computer to use the card data to obtain from the at least one data store, account data corresponding to the financial account;

(e) operating the at least one computer to use the account data obtained in (d) to obtain from the at least one data store, vehicle identifying data;

(f) operating the machine to read RFID data from the vehicle; and

wherein (a) includes operating the at least one computer to determine whether the RFID data read in (f) corresponds to the vehicle identifying data obtained in (e).

17. The method according to claim 15 and further comprising:

(c) operating the at least one computer to determine current location of the vehicle;

(d) operating the at least one computer to compare the current location determined in (c) to location of the machine;

wherein (bi) is dependent at least in part on a positive determination in (d),

wherein (bii) is dependent at least in part on a negative determination in (d).

18. The method according to claim 17 wherein (c) includes operating the at least one computer to determine the current location of the vehicle by obtaining Global Positioning System (GPS) data.

19. The method according to claim 17 wherein (c) includes operating the at least one computer to determine the current location of the vehicle by using RFID data.

20. The method according to claim 19 and further comprising:

(e) reading the RFID data from the vehicle while the vehicle is located in a drive through lane adjacent to the machine.
