Abstract

An apparatus for enabling transfer of mobile terminal inter-RAT capabilities in a multi-RAT environment from the perspective of the capability provider may include at least one processor and at least one memory including computer program code. The at least one memory and the computer program code may be configured, with the processor, to cause the apparatus to perform at least receiving an indication of a request for mobile terminal inter-RAT capability information relative to a particular RAT, acquiring the inter-RAT capability information in response to receipt of the indication of the request for inter-RAT capability information, and providing the inter-RAT capability information to a target base station.

Claims (34)

1. A method comprising:

receiving an indication of a request for inter-radio access technology capability information of a mobile terminal, wherein the inter-radio access technology capability information is specific to a particular radio access technology not currently involved in an inter-radio access technology handover between a source radio access network and a target radio access network, wherein the indication comprises an indicator bit in a handover complete message indicating the inter-radio access technology capability information is requested;

acquiring, in response to the received indication, the inter-radio access technology capability information; and

providing the acquired inter-radio access technology capability to a target base station.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile inter-radio access technology capability information comprises inter-radio handover information.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acquiring the inter-radio access technology capability information comprises acquiring the inter-radio access technology capability information via a routing area update.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the providing the inter-radio access technology capability information comprises providing the inter-radio access technology capability information via a packet switched handover complete acknowledgement message.

5. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium including computer program code which when executed by at least one processor causes operations comprising:

receiving an indication of a request for inter-radio access technology capability information of a mobile terminal, wherein the inter-radio access technology capability information is specific to a particular radio access technology not currently involved in an inter-radio access technology handover between a source radio access network and a target radio network, wherein the indication comprises an indicator bit in a handover complete message indicating the inter-radio access technology capability information is requested;

acquiring, in response to the received indication, the inter-radio access technology capability information; and

providing the acquired inter-radio access technology capability information to a target base station.

6. An apparatus comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one memory including computer program code, the at least one processor, the at least one memory, and the computer program code configured to cause the apparatus to at least:

receive an indication of a request for inter-radio access technology capability information of a mobile terminal, wherein the inter-radio access technology capability information is specific to a particular radio access technology not currently involved in an inter-radio access technology handover between a source radio access network and a target radio access network, wherein the indication comprises an indicator bit in a handover complete message indicating the inter-radio access technology capability information is requested;

acquire, in response to the received indication, the inter-radio access technology capability information; and

provide, the acquired inter-radio access technology capability information to a target base station.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the mobile inter-radio access technology capability information comprises inter-radio handover information.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the apparatus is further configured to at least cause the apparatus to acquire the inter-radio access technology capability information via a routing area update.

9. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the apparatus is further configured to at least provide the inter-radio access technology capability information via a packet switched handover complete acknowledgement message.

10. A method comprising:

receiving an indication of a request for a handover;

determining whether an inter-radio access technology capability information of a mobile terminal is available for a plurality of potentially supportable radio access technologies not involved in the current handover between a source radio access network and a target radio access network; and

providing a message with an indicator bit comprising a handover complete message indicative of a request for the inter-radio access technology capability information for a particular radio access technology of the potentially supportable radio access technologies.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising receiving the inter-radio access technology capability information requested.

12. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium including computer program code which when executed by at least one processor causes operations comprising:

receiving an indication of a request for a handover;

determining whether an inter-radio access technology capability information of a mobile terminal is available or needs to be acquired for a plurality of potentially supportable radio access technologies not involved in the current handover between a source radio access network and a target radio access network; and

providing a message with an indicator bit comprising a handover complete message indicative of a request for the inter-radio access technology capability information for a particular radio access technology of the potentially supportable radio access technologies.

13. An apparatus comprising at least one processor and at least one memory including computer program code, the at least one memory and the computer program code configured to, with the processor, cause the apparatus to at least perform the following:

receive an indication of a request for a handover;

determine whether an inter-radio access technology capability information of a mobile terminal is available or needs to be acquired for a plurality of potentially supportable radio access technologies not involved in the current handover between a source radio access network and a target radio access network; and

provide a message with an indicator bit comprising a handover complete message indicative of a request for the inter-radio access technology capability information for a particular radio access technology of the potentially supportable radio access technologies.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the apparatus is further configured to at least receive the radio access technology capability information requested.
