Abstract

A transluminal approach through a natural body cavity to repair a ventral hernia is provided. In a transgastric approach, the abdominal cavity is accessed via an incision through a wall of the digestive tract. A system for the deployment of tissue anchors to anchor a tissue reinforcing mesh to repair the ventral hernia is provided. Particular tissue anchors are disclosed. In certain embodiments, the tissue anchors include a shaft and a head reconfigurably coupled to the shaft permitting the head and shaft to be in a substantially parallel loaded configuration and in a substantially transverse deployed configuration. In addition, tissue anchors may include biodegradable and non-biodegradable components, with the non-biodegradable component defining spaces for soft tissue ingrowth upon degradation of the biodegradable component.

Claims (29)

1. A tissue anchor for anchoring to soft tissue, comprising:

a head portion and a straight shaft portion, the head and shaft portions having a loaded configuration and a deployed configuration, wherein

in said loaded configuration, said head and shaft portions are substantially parallel to each other, and

in said deployed configuration said head and shaft portions are transverse to each other with said shaft portion,

wherein said tissue anchor includes biodegradable and non-biodegradable components, and said non-biodegradable component defines spaces for soft tissue ingrowth upon degradation of said biodegradable component.

2. A tissue anchor according to claim 1 , wherein:

in said deployed configuration said head and shaft portions are in a T-shaped configuration.

3. A tissue anchor according to claim 1 , wherein:

said head and shaft portions are rotatable about a pivot.

4. A tissue anchor according to claim 1 , wherein:

said tissue anchor comprises a shape memory material, and upon application of heat, said tissue anchor reconfigures from said loaded configuration into said deployed configuration.

5. A tissue anchor according to claim 1 , wherein:

in said loaded configuration, said head and shaft portions extend within a common plane.

6. A tissue anchor according to claim 1 , wherein:

said head portion includes a sharp portion for piercing tissue, and said shaft portion includes a cinch slidable thereon.

7. A tissue anchor according to claim 1 , wherein:

said head portion includes a sharp portion for piercing tissue, and said shaft portion includes an eye.

8. A tissue anchor according to claim 1 , wherein:

said shaft is coupled to a central portion of said head portion.

9. A tissue anchor according to claim 1 , wherein:

said tissue anchor is adapted to be deployed via a deployment device having a tubular tissue chamber having a diameter not exceeding 3 mm, and said head portion of said tissue anchor has dimensions across said head portion permitting loading of said tissue anchor within the tissue chamber.

10. A tissue anchor for anchoring to soft tissue, comprising:

a first tissue retainer portion that engages soft tissue and a second portion that remains on an opposite side of the soft tissue, said first portion including biodegradable and non-biodegradable components, wherein said non-biodegradable component defines spaces for soft tissue ingrowth upon degradation of said biodegradable component.

11. A tissue anchor according to claim 10 , wherein:

said first tissue retainer portion and said second portion are oriented transverse to each other when engaged to the soft tissue.

12. A tissue anchor according to claim 10 , wherein:

said first tissue retainer portion and said second portion are rotatable relative to each other.

13. A tissue anchor according to claim 10 , wherein:

said tissue anchor comprises a shape memory material, and upon application of heat to said shape memory material, said tissue anchor reconfigures said first tissue retainer portion relative to said second portion.
