Abstract

A database system comprising a plurality of access keys stored in a first data memory device sector, each access key associated with a node value stored in a second data memory device sector. An access key processor configured to receive an input value and return the associated node value for the input value if the input value matches an access key stored in the first data memory device sector. The access key processor is configured to generate a revised input value if the input value does not match an access key stored in the first data memory device; a default node value stored in the second data memory device sector and associated with a portion of the input value, wherein the access key processor is configured to return the default node value as part of the revised input value.

Claims (34)

1. A method for accessing a database comprising:

receiving an input value;

returning an associated node value stored in a first electronic data memory sector if the input value matches an associated key stored in a second electronic data memory sector;

returning an associated default node value stored in the second electronic data memory sector if the input value does not match an associated key stored in the second electronic data memory sector;

appending the default node value to a portion of the input value to create a new input value; and

returning an associated node value stored in the first electronic data memory sector if the new input value matches an associated key stored in the second electronic data memory sector.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising returning a search failed indication if the associated default node value is not stored in the second electronic data memory sector.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the portion of the input value comprises a least significant field of a hierarchical naming schema.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the default node value comprises a most significant field of a hierarchical naming schema.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein the hierarchical naming schema comprises an XML naming schema.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising returning an associated default node value stored in the second electronic data memory sector if the new input value does not match an associated key stored in the second electronic data memory sector.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising returning a search failed indication if there is no remaining portion of the new input value.

8. The method of claim 6 further comprising appending the default node value to a portion of the new input value to create a second new input value.

9. A method for accessing a database comprising:

receiving an input value corresponding to an access key stored in a first data memory device sector, the access key associated with a node value stored in a second data memory device sector

returning an associated node value stored in a first electronic data memory sector using an access key processor if the input value matches an associated key stored in a second electronic data memory sector;

returning an associated default node value stored in the second electronic data memory sector using the access key processor if the input value does not match an associated key stored in the second electronic data memory sector;

appending the default node value from the second data memory device sector to a portion of the input value to create a new input value; and

returning an associated node value stored in the first electronic data memory sector if the new input value matches an associated key stored in the second electronic data memory sector.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising returning a search failed indication if the associated default node value is not stored in the second electronic data memory sector.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the portion of the input value comprises a least significant field of a hierarchical naming schema.

12. The method of claim 9 wherein the default node value comprises a most significant field of a hierarchical naming schema.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein the hierarchical naming schema comprises an XML naming schema.

14. A method for accessing a database comprising:

receiving an input value;

returning an associated node value stored in a first electronic data memory sector if the input value matches an associated key stored in a second electronic data memory sector;

returning an associated default node value stored in the second electronic data memory sector if the input value does not match an associated key stored in the second electronic data memory sector; and

appending the default node value to a portion of the input value to create a new input value, wherein the portion of the input value comprises a least significant field of a hierarchical naming schema and the hierarchical naming schema comprises an XML naming schema.

15. The method of claim 14 further comprising returning a search failed indication if the associated default node value is not stored in the second electronic data memory sector.

16. The method of claim 14 wherein the default node value comprises a most significant field of a hierarchical naming schema.

17. The method of claim 14 further comprising returning an associated default node value stored in the second electronic data memory sector if the new input value does not match an associated key stored in the second electronic data memory sector.

18. The method of claim 17 further comprising returning a search failed indication if there is no remaining portion of the new input value.

19. The method of claim 17 further comprising appending the default node value to a portion of the new input value to create a second new input value.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein the portion of the input value comprises a least significant field of a hierarchical naming schema and the default node value comprises a most significant field of the hierarchical naming schema.
