Abstract

A method is provided to enable the person to switch use of computing devices when working with records and/or documents. A method such as described may be implemented for an individual operating two (or more) computing devices that share and synchronize sets of records. One or more operations may be performed to update and maintain correspondence between the two sets of records. A switchover event may be detected, where the event corresponds to the individual using a second computing device while already using a first computing device. Once the switchover event is detected, state of use information may be received on the second computing device. This information indicates the state of use of one or more records on the first computing device. This information may be used to affect the state of use of corresponding records on the second computing device. In particular, the corresponding records on the second computing device may be placed in a state of use, or in a selected state for subsequent use.

Claims (54)

1. A method for switching states between a first computing device and a second computing device, the method comprising:

establishing a communication link between the first computing device and the second computing device;

receiving at the second computing device through the communication link, in response to a switchover event at the first computing device to change a state of first application executing at the first computing device, information comprising: identification of the first application on the first computing device, and state of the first application;

storing the received identification of the first application and the state of the first application;

executing a second application on the second computing device, the second application associated with the first application based on the received identification of the first application; and

establishing a state of the second application based on the received state of the first application, the state of the second application placing the second application at the state of first application at the switchover event.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

performing a synchronization processes to establish correspondence between a first set of application resources of the first application and a second set of application resources of the second application, the first application resources.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing for display from the second computing device the second application.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining whether a resource required by the first application is present for the second application; and

retrieving, in response to the resource not being present, the resource for the second application.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the resource comprises one of a record, a document, a message, a program, an executable, a script, and a macro.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

generating, in response to receiving the information from the first computing device, a body or an address for the message on the second computing device, wherein the information indicates the identified first application resource on the first computing device is opened and contains the body or the address.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first application is functionally equivalent to the second application.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

detecting a crossover event associated with the second application; and

transmitting to the first computing device in response to the crossover event, information from the second computing device comprising:

an identification of the second application, and

a new state of the second application.

9. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions thereon, the instructions when executed cause at least one processor to:

establish a communication link between the first computing device and the second computing device;

receive at the second computing device through the communication link, in response to a switchover event at the first computing device to change a state of first application executing at the first computing device, information comprising: identification of the first application on the first computing device, and state of the first application;

store the received identification of the first application and the state of the first application;

execute a second application on the second computing device, the second application associated with the first application based on the received identification of the first application; and

establish a state of the second application based on the received state of the first application, the state of the second application placing the second application at the state of first application at the switchover event.

10. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 9 , further comprising instructions that cause the at least one processor to:

perform a synchronization processes to establish correspondence between a first set of application resources of the first application and a second set of application resources of the second application, the first application resources.

11. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 9 , further comprising instructions that cause the at least one processor to provide for display from the second computing device the second application.

12. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 9 , further comprising instructions that cause the at least one processor to:

determine whether a resource required by the first application is present for the second application; and

retrieve, in response to the resource not being present, the resource for the second application.

13. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 4 , wherein the resource comprises one of a record, a document, a message, a program, an executable, a script, and a macro.

14. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , further comprising instructions that cause the at least one processor to:

generate, in response to receiving the information from the first computing device, a body or an address for the message on the second computing device, wherein the information indicates the identified first application resource on the first computing device is opened and contains the body or the address.

15. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the first application is functionally equivalent to the second application.

16. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 15 , further comprising instructions that cause the at least one processor to:

detect a crossover event associated with the second application; and

transmit to the first computing device in response to the crossover event, information from the second computing device comprising:

an identification of the second application, and

a new state of the second application.

17. A system for switching states between a first computing device and a second computing device, the system comprising:

a means for establishing a communication link between the first computing device and the second computing device;

a means for receiving at the second computing device through the communication link, in response to a switchover event at the first computing device to change a state of first application executing at the first computing device, information comprising: identification of the first application on the first computing device, and state of the first application;

a means for storing the received identification of the first application and the state of the first application;

a means for executing a second application on the second computing device, the second application associated with the first application based on the received identification of the first application; and

a means for establishing a state of the second application based on the received state of the first application, the state of the second application placing the second application at the state of first application at the switchover event.

18. The system of claim 17 , further comprising:

a means for performing a synchronization processes to establish correspondence between a first set of application resources of the first application and a second set of application resources of the second application, the first application resources.

19. The system of claim 17 , further comprising a means for providing for display from the second computing device the second application.

20. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a means for determining whether a resource required by the first application is present for the second application; and

a means for retrieving, in response to the resource not being present, the resource for the second application.
