Abstract

A bi-directional optical transceiver includes multiple single mode optical ports and a multi-mode optical port. A multi-mode optical combiner combines single mode optical signals received at the single mode optical ports into a multi-mode optical signal at the multi-mode optical port. Each single mode optical signal having a distinct optical mode that does not interfere with the optical mode of the other single mode optical signals. A photo detector coupled to the multi-mode optical combiner detects a total optical power of the single mode optical signals in the multi-mode optical signal.

Claims (19)

1. A bi-directional optical transceiver, comprising:

a plurality of single mode optical ports including circuitry programmed to enable communication between a plurality of customer sites and a regional distribution node via a plurality of corresponding single-mode optical fibers;

a multi-mode passive optical combiner coupled between the plurality of single-mode optical ports and at least one multi-mode optical fiber, and configured to combine a plurality of single-mode optical signals into a single, multi-mode optical signal, wherein the single-mode optical signals are from the plurality of single-mode optical fibers and received at the plurality of single-mode optical ports, each of the received single-mode optical signals having a distinct optical mode, wherein the at least one multi-mode optical fiber is configured to output power in a plurality of modal patterns via the multi-mode optical signal; and

a photo detector coupled to the at least one multi-mode optical fiber and formed large enough to detect a total optical power of the multi-mode optical signal output from the at least one multi-mode optical fiber without optical beat interference in a detector output signal; and

an amplifier coupled to receive an output of the photo detector.

2. A radio frequency over glass (RFoG) communication system, comprising:

a plurality of single-mode optical fibers coupled between a plurality of corresponding customer sites and a regional distribution node;

a plurality of multi-mode optical fibers between the regional distribution node and a digital content distribution headend, each of the multi-mode optical fibers for outputting power in a plurality of modal patterns via a multi-mode optical signal;

a plurality of multi-mode passive optical couplers, each formed and arranged to couple a plurality of single-mode optical signals from the plurality of the single-mode optical fibers to one of the multi-mode optical fibers, each of the single-mode optical signals in the multi-mode optical fibers having a distinct optical mode;

a photo detector coupled to each multi-mode optical fiber and formed large enough to detect a total optical power of the multi-mode signal output from the multi-mode optical fiber to which it is coupled without optical beat interference in a detector output signal; and

an amplifier coupled to receive an output of each photo detector.

3. The bi-directional transceiver of claim 1 , wherein

the multi-mode optical combiner is configured such that each of the single mode optical signals received at the plurality of single mode optical ports excites a different non-interfering modal pattern in the multi-mode optical signal.

4. The RFoG communication system of claim 2 , wherein each multi-mode optical coupler is configured such that each of the single-mode optical signals excites a different non-interfering modal pattern in a corresponding one of the multi-mode optical fibers.

5. The bi-directional transceiver of claim 1 , wherein a summation by the photo detector of power of all of the optical modes causes self-cancellation of the optical beat interference in the detector output signal.

6. The bi-directional optical transceiver of claim 1 , wherein the optical signal modal patterns in the single, multi-mode optical signal do not mutually interfere.

7. The bi-directional optical transceiver of claim 1 , wherein at least two of the plurality of single mode optical signals that are combined have optical frequencies that would cause optical beat interference if the photo detector were not formed large enough to detect the total optical power.

8. The RFoG communication system of claim 2 , wherein a summation by the photo detector of the total optical power cancels optical beat interference in the detector output signal.

9. The RFoG communication system of claim 2 , wherein at least two of the plurality of single-mode optical signals that are combined have optical frequencies that would cause optical beat interference if the photo detector were not formed large enough to detect the total optical power.
