Abstract

Non-cementitious CO 2 sequestering compositions are provided. The compositions of the invention include a CO 2 sequestering additive, e.g., a CO 2 sequestering carbonate composition. Additional aspects of the invention include methods of making and using the non-cementitious CO 2 sequestering compositions.

Claims (22)

- 2 . (canceled)

. A method of forming a non-cementitious composition, comprising:

precipitating a CO 2 sequestering composition by contacting CO 2 released from combustion of fuel with an aqueous composition, wherein said CO 2 sequestering composition comprises carbon from said CO 2 ; and

producing a non-cementitious composition comprising said CO 2 sequestering composition in an amount of 1% by weight or more.

. The method of claim 3 , wherein said precipitating comprises removing protons from said aqueous composition using a proton-removing agent.

. The method of claim 4 , wherein said proton-removing agent comprises naturally occurring proton-removing agent, synthetic proton-removing agent, microorganism, fungi, man-made waste stream, or any combination thereof.

. The method of claim 4 , further comprising forming said proton-removing agent by an electrochemical process.

. The method of claim 6 , further comprising producing hydroxide at a cathode and an acid at an anode in said electrochemical process.

. The method of claim 7 , wherein said acid is hydrochloric acid and said method further comprises producing vinyl chloride monomer from said hydrochloric acid.

. The method of claim 8 , further comprising producing poly(vinyl chloride) from said vinyl chloride monomer.

. The method of claim 3 , wherein said aqueous composition comprises alkaline-earth-metal selected from the group consisting of calcium, magnesium, and combination thereof.

. The method of claim 3 , wherein said non-cementitious composition is selected from the group consisting of paper product, polymer product, lubricant, adhesive, rubber product, chalk, asphalt product, paint, abrasive for paint removal, personal care product, cosmetic, cleaning product, personal hygiene product, ingestible product, agricultural product, soil amendment product, pesticide, environmental remediation product, and combination thereof.

. The method of claim 11 , wherein said environmental remediation product is forest soil restoration or neutralization of over-acidified water.

. The method of claim 3 , wherein said CO 2 sequestering composition is in said amount of 5-75% w/w in said non-cementitious composition.

. The method of claim 3 , wherein said CO 2 sequestering composition is in a storage stable form.

. The method of claim 3 , wherein said fuel is fossil fuel.

. The method of claim 3 , wherein said CO 2 sequestering composition stores 50 tons or more of said CO 2 .

. The method of claim 3 , wherein said CO 2 sequestering composition comprises 5% or more of said CO 2 as carbonate compound.

. The method of claim 17 , wherein said carbonate compound is a metastable carbonate compound selected from the group consisting of vaterite, aragonite, amorphous calcium carbonate, and combination thereof.

. The method of claim 3 , wherein said CO 2 sequestering composition is a low carbon foot-print composition.

. The method of claim 19 , wherein said low carbon foot-print composition comprises a negative foot-print of 50 lbs CO 2 /cu yd or less.

. The method of claim 3 , wherein said step of contacting occurs prior to said step of precipitating.
