Abstract

Apparatus for endovascularly replacing a patient's heart valve, including: a replacement valve adapted to be delivered endovascularly to a vicinity of the heart valve; an expandable anchor adapted to be delivered endovascularly to the vicinity of the heart valve; and a lock mechanism configured to maintain a minimum amount of anchor expansion. The invention also includes a method for endovascularly replacing a patient's heart valve. In some embodiments the method includes the steps of: endovascularly delivering a replacement valve and an expandable anchor to a vicinity of the heart valve; expanding the anchor to a deployed configuration; and locking the anchor in the deployed configuration.

Claims (14)

1. A replacement heart valve comprising:

an expandable anchor comprising a metallic framework, an unexpanded configuration, and an expanded configuration, the expandable anchor having three vertical posts, a proximal region, and a distal skirt attachment region, the distal skirt attachment region defining a distal undulating band having peaks and valleys and the proximal region defining a proximal undulating band having peaks and valleys, each of the vertical posts extending from a peak of the distal undulating band;

the expandable anchor further comprising at least one catch, wherein at least one of the three vertical posts is engaged to the catch when the expandable anchor is in the expanded configuration and disengaged from the catch in the unexpanded configuration; and

a tri-leaflet valve, the tri-leaflet valve attached to the posts via a suture material.

2. The replacement heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the expandable anchor has a larger diameter in the expanded configuration than in the unexpanded configuration.

3. The replacement heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the expandable anchor is formed from stainless steel.

4. The replacement heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the expandable anchor further comprises a plurality of barb elements.

5. The replacement heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the expandable anchor further comprises a plurality of locking elements.

6. The replacement heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the tri-leaflet valve is formed from biologic tissue.

7. The replacement heart valve of claim 6 , wherein the biologic tissue is bovine or porcine tissue.

8. The replacement heart valve of claim 7 , wherein the biologic tissue is bovine pericardium.

9. The replacement heart valve of claim 1 , wherein, upon expansion from the undeployed configuration to the deployed configuration, the expandable anchor is plastically deformed.

The replacement heart valve of claim 9 further comprising a central region between the proximal region and distal skirt attachment region, the central region comprising an undulating band, wherein a plurality of open cells are formed between adjacent undulating bands, at least two of the undulating bands attached to one another in a peak-to-valley configuration.

11. The replacement heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the expandable anchor is formed from a cobalt-chromium alloy.
