Abstract

This invention relates to a paper substrate containing high surface sizing and low internal sizing and having high dimensional stability, as well as methods of making and using the composition.

Claims (24)

1. A paper substrate, comprising

a plurality of cellulose fibers; and

a sizing agent; wherein the paper substrate has a hygroexpansivity of from 0.6 to 1.5% , a CD Internal Scott Bond of not more than 300 J/m 2 and/or an MD Internal Scott Bond of not more than 300 J/m 2 , wherein said substrate further comprises at least one bulking agent and at least one ionic compound.

2. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein the paper substrate has a hygroexpansivity of from 0.6 to 1.25%.

3. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , further comprising from 0.25 to 10 gsm of a sizing agent ; wherein the paper substrate has a hygroexpansivity of from 0.6 to 1.25.

4. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , further comprising from 0.25 to 10 gsm of a sizing agent; wherein the paper substrate has an Internal Bond/sizing agent ratio that is less than 100 J/m 2 /gsm and a hygroexpansivity of from 0.6 to 1.25%.

5. The substrate according to claim 4 , wherein an Internal Bond/sizing agent ratio is less than or equal to 80 J/m 2 /gsm.

6. The substrate according to claim 4 , wherein an Internal Bond/sizing agent ratio is less than or equal to 60 J/m 2 /gsm.

7. The substrate according to claim 4 , wherein an Internal Bond/sizing agent ratio is less than or equal to 40 J/m 2 /gsm.

8. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one bulking agent is an expandable microsphere.

9. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein said ionic compound is at least one compound selected from the group consisting of an organic and inorganic ionic compound.

10. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein said ionic compound is at least one polyorganic compound.

11. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein said ionic compound is at least one polyamine compound.

12. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein said ionic compound is crosslinked, branched, or combinations thereof.

13. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein said ionic compound is at least one polyethyleneimine compound.

14. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein said ionic compound is at least one polyethyleneimine compound having a molecular weight of from 600 to 40,000 weight average molecular weight.

15. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein said ionic compound is cationic.

16. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein said ionic compound comprises at least one member selected from the group consisting of alumina and silica.

17. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein said ionic compound comprises a colloid comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of silica, alumina, tin oxide, zirconia, antimony oxide, iron oxide, and rare earth metal oxides.

18. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein said ionic compound comprises a sol comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of silica, alumina, tin oxide, zirconia, antimony oxide, iron oxide, and rare earth metal oxides.

19. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one bulking agent is an expandable microsphere and an outside surface of the at least one expandable microsphere is bound to the ionic compound.

20. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one bulking agent is an expandable microsphere and an outside surface of the at least one expandable microsphere is non-covalently bound to the ionic compound.

21. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein an outside surface of at least one expandable microsphere is anionic.

22. The paper substrate according to claim 1 , wherein the ionic compound is cationic.
