Abstract

Electrodes for lithium batteries are coated via an atomic layer deposition process. The coatings can be applied to the assembled electrodes, or in some cases to particles of electrode material prior to assembling the particles into an electrode. The coatings can be as thin as 2 Ångstroms thick. The coating provides for a stable electrode. Batteries containing the electrodes tend to exhibit high cycling capacities.

Claims (6)

1. A process for preparing a lithium ion battery electrode, comprising shaping a mixture of particles of a cathode or anode material and a binder to form a shaped lithium ion battery electrode in which the particles are held together by the binder, and applying an alumina coating having a thickness from 2 to 20 Ångstroms to the shaped lithium ion battery electrode via an atomic layer deposition process, wherein during the atomic layer deposition process, reactants applied during the atomic layer deposition process diffuse through the binder and react at the surface of the particles of the cathode or anode material to coat the particles of cathode or anode material in the electrode.

2. The process of claim 1 , wherein the particles have a longest dimension of up to 5 μm.

3. The process of claim 1 , wherein the particles are of a cathode material.

4. The process of claim 3 , wherein the cathode material is CoO 2 , MnO, V 2 O 5 , V 6 O 13 a lithium/cobalt composite oxide, a lithium/nickel composite oxide, lithium/manganese composite oxides whose basic composition is approximately LiMn 2 O 4 or LiMnO 2 , a lithium iron phosphate, a lithium iron phosphate fluoride, a lithium manganese phosphate, a lithium cobalt phosphates, a lithium iron manganese phosphate, SnO 2 , SiO 2 , lithium iron orthosilicate or a mixture of two or more thereof.

5. The process of claim 1 , wherein the particles are of an anode material.

6. The process of claim 5 wherein the anode material is natural or artificial graphite, carbonized pitch, a carbon fiber, porous glass carbon, a graphitized mesophase microsphere, furnace black, acetylene black, lithium, silicon, germanium, molybdenum oxide or a mixture of two or more thereof.
