Abstract

A robust alarm system has an alarm controller adapted to input an alarm trigger and to generate at least one alarm drive signal in response. Alarm subsystems input the alarm drive signal and activate one or more of multiple alarms accordingly. A subsystem function signal provides feedback to the alarm controller as to alarm subsystem integrity. A malfunction indicator is output from the alarm controller in response to a failure within the alarm subsystems.

Claims (40)

1. A patient monitoring device comprising:

a first housing comprising:

a driving circuit configured to drive one or more emitters;

a front end processing circuit configured to receive a signal from a detector responsive to light from said emitters attenuated by body tissue;

a first alarm comprising an alarm driving circuit, said first alarm configured to provide an audible alert to a caregiver;

an alarm detector comprising a piezoelectric sensor mechanically coupled to said first alarm to detect vibrations therefrom, the alarm detector configured to determine whether said first alarm is malfunctioning;

a circuit tester comprising an electronic circuit configured to determine whether said alarm driving circuit is malfunctioning; and

a processor responsive to said front end processing circuit to process said signal to determine one or more measurement values for one or more physiological parameters of a patient being monitored, said processor also configured to trigger said first alarm when one or more of said measurement values should receive caregiver review;

a second housing configured to communicate with said first housing, the second housing comprising a second processor and a second alarm configured to provide an audible alert, wherein said second processor is configured to trigger said second alarm based on a malfunction signal associated with said first alarm from at least one of said alarm detector or said circuit tester.

2. The monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein said first alarm comprises a sound transducer.

3. The monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein said first alarm comprises a robust alarm.

4. The monitoring device of claim 3 , wherein said robust alarm comprises a plurality of sound transducers.

5. The monitoring device of claim 1 comprising a malfunction indicator providing an alert that said first alarm was nonresponsive when triggered by said processor based on said malfunction signal.

6. The monitoring device of claim 5 , wherein said malfunction indicator comprises a buzzer.

7. The monitoring device of claim 5 , wherein said malfunction indicator comprises an audible alert.

8. A method of indicating to a caregiver that an alarm system has failed without duplicating said alarm system, the method comprising:

driving one or more emitters;

processing, by a front end processing circuit, a signal from a detector responsive to light from said emitters attenuated by body tissue;

determining, by a processor responsive to said front end processing circuit, one or more measurement values for one or more physiological parameters of a patient being monitored,

triggering, by said processor, an alarm system when one or more of said measurement values should receive caregiver review, wherein the alarm system is provided in a first housing;

receiving, by said processor, a malfunction signal associated with the alarm system from at least one of an alarm detector or a circuit tester for verifying integrity of a drive circuit associated with said alarm system;

providing-an alert that said alarm system was nonresponsive when triggered based, at least in part, on the malfunction signal, said alert comprising an audible alert; and

distributing said malfunction signal alert to a second housing separate from said first housing and triggering an alarm responsive thereto.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein said audible alert comprises a buzzer.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein said alarm system comprises a sound transducer.

11. A patient monitoring device comprising:

a first housing comprising:

a driving circuit configured to drive one or more emitters;

a front end processing circuit configured to receive a signal from a detector responsive to light from said emitters attenuated by body tissue;

a first alarm comprising an alarm driving circuit, said first alarm configured to provide an audible alert to a caregiver;

an alarm detector comprising a sensor configured to determine whether said first alarm is malfunctioning;

a circuit tester comprising an electronic circuit configured to determine whether said alarm driving circuit is malfunctioning; and

a processor responsive to said front end processing circuit to process said signal to determine one or more measurement values for one or more physiological parameters of a patient being monitored, said processor also configured to trigger said first alarm when one or more of said measurement values should receive caregiver review;

a second housing configured to communicate with said first housing, the second housing comprising a second alarm configured to provide an audible alert based on a malfunction signal associated with said first alarm from at least one of said alarm detector or said circuit tester.

12. The monitoring device of claim 11 , wherein said first alarm comprises a sound transducer.

13. The monitoring device of claim 11 , wherein said first alarm comprises a robust alarm.

14. The monitoring device of claim 13 , wherein said robust alarm comprises a plurality of sound transducers.

15. The monitoring device of claim 11 comprising a malfunction indicator providing an alert that said first alarm was nonresponsive when triggered by said processor based on said malfunction signal.

16. The monitoring device of claim 15 , wherein said malfunction indicator comprises a buzzer.

17. The monitoring device of claim 15 , wherein said malfunction indicator comprises an audible alert.
