Abstract

The present invention includes a fuel cell system having a plurality of adjacent electrochemical cells formed of an anode layer, a cathode layer spaced apart from the anode layer, and an electrolyte layer disposed between the anode layer and the cathode layer. The fuel cell system also includes at least one interconnect, the interconnect being structured to conduct free electrons between adjacent electrochemical cells. Each interconnect includes a primary conductor embedded within the electrolyte layer and structured to conduct the free electrons.

Claims (12)

1. A fuel cell system, comprising:

a plurality of electrochemical cells, each electrochemical cell formed of an anode, a cathode spaced apart from said anode, and an electrolyte disposed between said anode and said cathode;

an interconnect electrically coupling a pair of electrically adjacent electrochemical cells, said interconnect electrically coupling said anode of one electrochemical cell to said cathode of the other electrochemical cell; and

a cathode conductive layer electrically coupled to said interconnect,

wherein said interconnect is in contact with said cathode conductive layer and in contact with said electrolyte; and wherein said interconnect is formed of a cermet compound having at least one non-ionic conducting ceramic phase; and wherein said at least one non-ionic conducting ceramic phase includes pyrochlore, wherein the pyrochlore is (M RE ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 , and wherein M RE is a rare earth cation.

2. The fuel cell system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one non-ionic conducting ceramic phase of the cermet compound includes pyrochlore powder, wherein the pyrochlore powder is (M RE ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 , and wherein M RE is a rare earth cation.

3. The fuel cell system of claim 1 , wherein the cermet compound metal phase is Ni or a Ni alloy.

4. The fuel cell system of claim 1 , wherein said interconnect includes a portion embedded within said electrolyte.

5. The fuel cell system of claim 1 , wherein the ceramic phase of the cermet compound includes an ionic conducting phase.

6. The fuel cell system of claim 5 , wherein the ionic conducting phase is yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and the YSZ volume fraction of the ceramic phase is less than 30v%.

7. The fuel cell system of claim 5 , wherein an amount of non-ionic conducting phase in the cermet compound is determined to render balance of said ionic conducting phase to below a percolation threshold.

8. The fuel cell system of claim 5 , wherein said cathode conductive layer is in contact with said electrolyte.
