Abstract

A method, apparatus, and communication network system that allows an endpoint to be simultaneously registered with more than one communications server is described. In one embodiment, the communication network system includes a network, a plurality of communications servers that are coupled to the network, and a plurality of endpoints coupled to the network. Each endpoint is capable of being simultaneously registered with more than one communications server. A communication method for an endpoint involves registering a first logical line of the endpoint with a first communications server, and registering a second logical line of the endpoint with a second communications server. Consequently, flexibility is obtained by allowing an endpoint to choose the registering communications server for each logical line of the endpoint.

Claims (45)

1. A communication system comprising:

a plurality of communication servers coupled to a communication network;

a plurality of endpoints coupled to the communication network, at least one of the endpoints being simultaneously registered with at least two of the communication servers to enable the at least one endpoint to establish a communication session over the communication network with another of the endpoints, wherein the communication session is under the control of any of the at least two communication servers with which the at least one of the endpoints is registered.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein any of the communication servers with which the at least one endpoint is registered is operable to establish a communication session between the at least one endpoint and another of the endpoints connected to the communication network in response to a request from the at least one endpoint.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein any of the communication servers with which the at least one endpoint is registered is operable to establish a communication session between the at least one endpoint and another of the endpoints connected to the communication network in response to a request from the other endpoint.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one endpoint is configured:

to register a first logical line with a first communication server; and

to register a second logical line with a second communication server.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one communication server comprises a registration table, the registration table operable to list any endpoints registered with the at least one communication server.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the registration table comprises a listing of features supported by the at least one communication server.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a database server, the database server comprising a table listing the plurality of endpoints.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein one of the communication servers comprises the database server.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of endpoints is one of a digital telephone, an IP telephone and a media terminal.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one endpoint is coupled to the communication network via a terminal gateway.

11. A method of communicating over a communication system comprising a plurality of communication servers coupled to a communication network and a plurality of endpoints coupled to the communication network, the method comprising:

registering at least one of the endpoints with a first communication server to enable the at least one endpoint to establish a communication session over the communication network with another of the endpoints under the control of the first communication server; and

registering the at least one of the endpoints with a second communication server while the at least one of the endpoints is registered with the first communication server to enable the at least one endpoint to establish a communication session over the communication network with the other of the endpoints selectively either under the control of the second communication server or under the control of the first communication server.

12. The method of claim 11 , comprising:

sending a communication session request from the at least one endpoint to a selected one of the first and second communication servers; and

operating the selected communication server to establish a communication session between the at least one endpoint and another of the endpoints connected to the communication network in response to the request from the at least one endpoint.

13. The method of claim 11 , comprising

receiving at a selected one of the first and second communication servers a communication session request for a communication session with the at least one endpoint from another of the endpoints coupled to the communication network; and

operating the selected communication server to establish a communication session between the at least one endpoint and the other of the endpoints connected to the communication network in response to the request from the other endpoint.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein:

registering the at least one endpoint with the first communication server comprises registering a first logical line of the at least one endpoint with the first communication server; and

registering the at least one endpoint with the second communication server comprises registering a second logical line of the at least one endpoint with the first communication server.

15. The method of claim 11 , comprising maintaining at a communication server a registration table, the registration table listing any endpoints registered with the at least one communication server.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the registration table comprises a listing of features supported by the at least one communication server.

17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising maintaining at a database server a table listing the plurality of endpoints.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein one of the communication servers comprises the database server.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein each of the plurality of endpoints is one of a digital telephone, an IP telephone and a media terminal.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one endpoint is coupled to the communication network via a terminal gateway.

21. A method of operating an endpoint of a communication system comprising a plurality of communication servers coupled to a communication network and a plurality of endpoints coupled to the communication network, the method comprising:

registering the endpoint with a first communication server to enable the at least one endpoint to establish a communication session over the communication network with another of the endpoints under the control of the first communication server; and

registering the endpoint with a second communication server while the endpoint is registered with the first communication server to enable the at least one endpoint to establish a second communication session over the communication network with the other of the endpoints selectively either under the control of the second communication server or under the control of the first communication server.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein:

registering at least one of the endpoints with a first communication server to enable the at least one endpoint to establish a communication session over the communication network with the other of the endpoints under the control of the first communication server; and

registering the at least one of the endpoints with a second communication server while the at least one of the endpoints is registered with the first communication server to enable the at least one endpoint to establish a communication session over the communication network with the other of the endpoints selectively either under the control of the second communication server or under the control of the first communication server.

23. An endpoint for a communication system comprising a plurality of communication servers coupled to a communication network and a plurality of endpoints coupled to the communication network, the endpoint comprising registration logic configured:

to register the endpoint with a first communication server to enable the at least one endpoint to establish a communication session over the communication network with another of the endpoints under the control of the first communication server; and

to register the endpoint with a second communication server while the endpoint is registered with the first communication server to enable the at least one endpoint to establish a communication session over the communication network with another of the endpoints selectively either under the control of the second communication server or under the control of the first communication server.

24. The endpoint of claim 23 , wherein the registration logic is configured:

to register a first logical line with the first communication server; and

to register a second logical line with the second communication server.

25. The endpoint of claim 23 , wherein the endpoint is one of a digital telephone, an IP telephone and a media terminal.
