Abstract

In general, in one aspect, the disclosure features a system that includes a flexible waveguide having a hollow core extending along a waveguide axis and a region surrounding the core, the region being configured to guide radiation from the CO 2 laser along the waveguide axis from an input end to an output end of the waveguide. The system also includes a handpiece attached to the waveguide, wherein the handpiece allows an operator to control the orientation of the output end to direct the radiation to a target location of a patient and the handpiece includes a tip extending past the output end that provides a minimum standoff distance between the output end and the target location.

Claims (18)

1. An medical laser system for delivering laser radiation to a patient, comprising:

a laser configured to provide radiation at a wavelength λ; and

a conduit configured to deliver radiation at a wavelength λ from the laser to a target location of the patient, the conduit comprising:

a photonic crystal fiber waveguide extending along a waveguide axis, the photonic crystal fiber waveguide being a flexible waveguide having a hollow core, the photonic crystal fiber waveguide being configured to guide the radiation at λ through the core along the waveguide axis; and

a second optical waveguide extending along the waveguide axis, the second optical waveguide being coupled to the photonic crystal fiber waveguide to deliver the radiation to or receive the radiation from the photonic crystal fiber waveguide,

wherein the second optical waveguide is a non-photonic crystal fiber waveguide and the second optical waveguide has a hollow core.

2. The medical laser system of claim 1 , wherein the second optical waveguide is a hollow metallic waveguide.

3. The medical laser system of claim 1 , wherein the photonic crystal fiber comprises an all-dielectric confinement region surrounding the hollow core.

4. The medical laser system of claim 3 , wherein the dielectric confinement region comprises a layer of a first dielectric material arranged in a spiral around the waveguide axis.

5. The medical laser system of claim 4 , wherein the first dielectric material is a chalcogenide glass.

6. The medical laser system of claim 4 , wherein the dielectric confinement region further comprises a second dielectric material arranged in a spiral around the waveguide axis.

7. The medical laser system of claim 6 , wherein the first dielectric material is an inorganic glass and the second dielectric material is a polymer.

8. The medical laser system of claim 1 , wherein the photonic crystal fiber waveguide is sufficiently flexible to guide the radiation to the target location while a portion of the photonic crystal fiber waveguide is bent through an angle of about 90 degrees or more and the portion has a radius of curvature of about 12 centimeters or less.

9. The medical laser system of claim 8 , wherein the radiation has an average power at the output end of about 1 Watt or more while the portion of the photonic crystal fiber waveguide is bent through an angle of about 90 degrees or more and the portion has a radius of curvature of about 12 centimeters or less.

10. The medical laser system of claim 1 , wherein the laser is a CO 2 laser.

11. The medical laser system of claim 1 , wherein the laser is an Nd:YAG laser or an Er:YAG laser.

12. The medical laser system of claim 1 , wherein λ is about 2,000 nm or more.

13. The medical laser system of claim 1 , wherein λ is 10.6 μm.
