TOPICAL ANTIFUNGAL COMPOSITION
A topical, foamable composition is provided that includes at least one antifungal agent that is able to penetrate the upper layers of skin and is retained in or on an area to be treated for a prolonged period of time, and that has a residual non-volatile component content less than 25%. In addition, a method of treating fungal diseases including jock itch, tinea, dandruff and sebborheic dermatitis is provided, and includes applying to the affected area of patient requiring such treatment an antifungal composition.
1 . A topical, foamable composition comprising:
at least one antifungal agent;
at least one surfactant;
a long chain alcohol; and
water, wherein the composition is a temperature sensitive mousse, and has a residual non-volatile solvent component content of less than 25% by weight.
2 . The composition as claimed in claim 1 which has a residual non-volatile component content of less than 10% by weight.
3 . The composition as claimed in claim 1 which has a residual non-volatile component content of less than 6% by weight.

7 . The composition as claimed in claim 1 which is aqueous.
8 . The composition as claimed in claim 1 including a hydrocarbon gas propellant in an amount of less than 60% by weight.
9 . The composition as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the hydrocarbon gas propellant is present in an amount of less than 10% by weight.

The composition as claimed in claim 1 in which the at least one antifungal agent is selected from the group consisting of diols, allylamines, polyene macrolide antibiotics, triazole derivatives, fatty acids, amorolfine, ciclopirox, olamine, benzoic acid, flucytosine, haloprogin, tolnaftate, undecenoic acid and its salts, griseofulvin, and imidazole compounds.
12 . The composition as claimed in claim 1 in which the at least one antifungal agent is an imidazole compound.
13 . The composition as claimed in claim 1 in which the at least one antifungal agent is ketoconazole or chlorphenesin.

30 . A method of treating a fungal disease in a patient comprising applying to an affected area of the patient requiring such treatment the antifungal composition as claimed in claim 1 .

32 . The composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of ethoxylated sorbitan stearate, ethoxylated sorbitan palmitate, ethoxylated sorbitan oleate, nonyl phenol ethoxylates and fatty alcohol ethoxylates, and mixtures thereof.
33 . The composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein the surfactant is a fatty alcohol ethoxylate.
34 . The composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein the surfactant is Ceteth 20.
35 . The composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein the long chain alcohol is selected from the group consisting of cetyl alcohol, isocetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, lauryl alcohol, myristyl alcohol, palmityl alcohol, and mixtures thereof.
36 . The composition as claimed in claim 35 wherein the long chain alcohol is a mixture of cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, and isocetyl alcohol.
37 . The composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein the mousse includes no lower alcohol.
38 . The method as claimed in claim 30 wherein the fungal disease is selected from the group consisting of jock itch, tinea, dandruff, sebborheic dermatitis, and combinations thereof.
39 . The composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein:
the antifungal agent is ketoconazole or chlorphenisin;
the surfactant is a fatty alcohol ethoxylate; and
the long chain alcohol is selected from the group consisting of cetyl alcohol, isocetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, lauryl alcohol, myristyl alcohol, palmityl alcohol, and mixtures thereof.
40 . The composition as claimed in claim 39 , wherein:
the surfactant is Ceteth 20; and
the long chain alcohol is a mixture of cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, and isocetyl alcohol.
