Abstract

Implantable materials having defined patterns of affinity regions for binding endothelial cells and providing for directed endothelial cell migration across the surface of the material. The affinity regions include photochemically altered regions of a material surface and physical members patterned on the material surface that exhibit a greater affinity for endothelial cell binding and migration than the remaining regions of the material surface.

Claims (8)

1. An implantable, biocompatible material, comprising at least one original surface, wherein the at least one original surface has a patterned array of three-dimensional features on the at least one original surface having a height above the at least one original surface between about 0.1 μ to about 3.0 μ and having surface energy different than the at least one original surface of the biocompatible material, and wherein the plurality of three-dimensional features comprise a shape selected from the group consisting of a rectangular, triangular, circular, or square shape and increase the rate of endothelial cell binding, proliferation, and migration across the at least one original surface of the biocompatible material.

2. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 1 , wherein each of the features further comprises photochemically altered regions of the biocompatible material.

3. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 2 , wherein each of the photochemically altered regions further comprises titanium oxide.

4. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 1 , wherein the biocompatible material further comprises a nickel-titanium alloy material.

5. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 1 , wherein each of the features comprises a material selected from the group consisting of carbon and nickel-titanium alloy.

6. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 5 , wherein the features have a gap distance between adjacent features of about 0.1 μ to 3.0 μ.

7. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 1 , wherein each of the features has a width between about 10 μm to about 75 μm.

8. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 1 , further comprising a gap distance between adjacent features between about 10 μm to about 75 μm.
