Abstract

A free space laser beam communication system, set forth by way of example and not limitation, advantageously includes a laser beam generator configured to develop a laser beam, a laser beam detector which is not in a line-of-sight of the laser beam generator, and a laser beam redirector within a line-of-sight of the laser beam generator and configured to redirect the laser beam to the laser beam detector. A path of the laser beam can be varied by adjusting a relative position between the laser beam generator and the laser beam detector.

Claims (24)

1. A free space laser beam communication system comprising:

a first laser beam generator associated with an Internet endpoint and configured to develop a first laser beam modulated with TCP/IP data packets;

a first laser beam detector associated said first beam generator;

a second laser beam detector associated with a building and configured to develop a second laser beam modulated with TCP/IP data packets;

a second laser beam detector associated with said second laser beam generator;

wherein paths of said first laser beam and said second laser beam can be varied such that said first laser beam impinges on said second laser beam detector and said second laser beam impinges on said first laser beam detector;

whereby said building is in two-way, free space laser communication with said Internet endpoint, and

wherein at least one of said paths of said first laser beam and said second laser beam can be adjusted in at least two degrees of freedom.

2. A free space laser beam communication system as recited in claim 1 further comprising a laser beam redirector including a reflective surface for redirecting at least one of said first laser beam and said second laser beam.

3. A free space laser beam communication system as recited in claim 2 wherein said laser beam redirector is moved to adjust said path of said laser beam.

4. A free space laser beam communication system comprising:

a laser beam generator associated with an Internet endpoint and configured to develop a laser beam modulated with TCP/IP data packets;

a reflector within a line-of sight of said laser beam generator;

a laser beam detector associated with a building;

wherein said laser beam can be aimed at said laser beam detector by adjusting relative positions of said laser beam generator, said reflector and said laser beam detector;

whereby said building is in free space laser communication with said Internet endpoint; and

wherein a path of said laser beam can be adjusted by at least two degrees of freedom.

5. A free space laser beam communication system as recited in claim 4 wherein said path of said laser beam can be adjusted by at least two degrees of freedom.

6. A method for free space laser beam communication comprising:

providing a laser beam generator;

ray-tracing a path from said laser beam generator to a laser beam detector via at least one reflective surface;

aiming a laser beam of said laser beam generator to impinge upon said laser beam detector after being reflected by said at least one reflective surface, wherein said laser beam is modulated with data packets; and

wherein said aiming of said laser beam can be accomplished in at least two least two degrees of freedom by adjusting relative positions of said laser beam generator, a reflector and said laser beam detector.

7. A method for free space laser beam communication as recited in claim 6 wherein said aiming of said laser beam can be aimed using a ray-tracing algorithm.
